to control
the cablebox - where i can use as much features of it as i can, liking pulling menus and not just turn it off and on and control the channels
tv - basic off and on is ok
vcr- basic is ok
dvd - basic play is ok
dvd-r - as many features as I ca
living room lights - its a lutron dimmer model

something to control all of these, something not that expensive, but worth taking care of the business.

thank you for your time, its appreciated

Unless you're looking for something really fancy, I'd recommend that you check out the "One For All" URC-8810w which can be had for about $17 at most Walmarts.

It will probably control most of your devices right out of the box, then if you need to add a couple of buttons here and there, you can either use learning or you can use "advanced codes" (see my site for more info).

Plus, if you also get yourself a JP1 cable (available from $14 online) you can program the remote from your PC to do just about anything.
