I am a total newbie as far as remotes technology goes. I broke my mitsubishi rc (Mitsubishi 42 inch tv)and now I cannot control the PIP, close captions, audio and video functions in my tv. I cannot find a replacement for the rc anywhere (it seems it has been discontinued). I was suggested to try a learning remote. What remote do you reccomend I get to include all the functions? I guess I neeed to get a mitsubishi control like the broken one in order to "teach" the new universal control all the functions, right?
Please, any guidance will be more than appreciated.

A learning remote won't do you any good without a remote to learn from. I would recommend getting a One For All or Radio Shack brand universal remote. Most of these support advanced codes, which you can use to program any missing functions, and most of the higher end models (ie, cost around $30) have PIP buttons. Rob http://www.hifi-remote.com

Thanks very much Rob. I do have a person who owns an exact remote control as the one I broke, so I guess I can borrow it to "teach" a new learning universal control . However, I want a control that can learn ALL the functions the Mitsubishi one used to have, plus the ones from my stereo, DVD, DirectTV, etc. Which one should I get? Can any do what I expect?
Thanks again in advance.

Like Rob said, a better OFA/RS remote will give you ALL you need for about $30. Most functions of your TV will be preprogrammed to buttons (after you assign a device code), others will be accessible using advanced codes, and any that may "fall through the cracks" can be learned. Try the RS 15-2116 or OFA URC-8910. You'll be amazed what $30 can get you, and w/o the hassle of having to learn a zillion buttons as well. Merry Christmas!

A-ha, this is the other thread. OFA/RS remotes have limited learning memory capacity, but they probably have a built in code to work your TV, so that's not an issue. They probably have built in codes for most if not all of your other devices too.
If you really want to learn all these devices rather than using built in codes, you'd be better of with a Sony remote (like the VL900 or VL700) which have tons of learning memory.
