My sister in law purchased a symphonic brand TV and DVD at Wal*Mart. I got her an RCA RCU810 remote for christmas. I was trying to set it up in advance for her but there is no Code for Symphonics brand under DVD. I know that places like Wal*Mart Frequently have other companies make equiptment for them then place there name on the item. I am not familiar with either Wal*Mart or Symphonics so I thought I would ask. Best lead to date suggests that GE makes the units, but the source is somewhat suspect.

Thanx

Psych,

beautiful post here, much better than the one in the brain-dead thread earlier. Also, thanks for keeping your cool and going along with the humor there.
I can't help with who makes it. However, if worse-comes-to-worse, and you just gotta have it pre-set for her, one option would be to take the 810 into your local WW and use it's code search feature on a demo there. WW doesn't sell the 810 (at least I never saw it in one), so it'd be pretty hard for them to substantiate a shop-lifting charge. I know at least one guy that takes his learner remotes into stores and uses it to copy oem remotes for devices so he can take it home to decode and builds a web-site database by doing that.
I would also think that the mfr. would be mentioned somewhere on the documentattion, especially the user manual for the dvd, perhaps the warranty card as well; so sneek a peek at the paperwork in a box at WW. I suppose you could also get that from the S-i-L without letting the cat out of the bag about your gift intentions.

from [Link: hifi-remote.com]

symphonic TV = 0171 = Magnavox
none were listed for DVD.

The problem with rebranding ids that the actual manufacturer can change between models (i.e. they used GE but now use Magnavox or vice versa) so model number is more important then for real manufacturers

psycho,
I was sending some pkgs off fed-ex today and someone used a symph. tv box to send something. The box said it was mfr'd by Funai electronics. My wife has a funai vcr, and to be honest, it's pretty crappy. Looks like at any particular point in time symphonics could have been made by a variety of outfits. I think your best bet is to just ask your s-i-l who's listed as the mfr on the dvd player box.

If TV/0171 is the right code (using an OFA or RS remote) then it would be TV/0188 using the RCU810 as the codes are all 17 higher with this remote.

Psycho, if this code works for the TV, she could use learning for the DVD. Better yet, get yourself a JP1 cable and program the remote for her using JP1.

If you check the BDT thread, Psycho's DVD is a DVD/VCR combo, that's a whole new ballgame. Sony's DVD/VCR combo neither uses sony's DVD code nor it's VCR code. Combos are a pain in the neck.

WOW!
Folks, Thanx for all the help. I think I'd really have to work at it to avoid figuring this problem out.
