Any recommendations or insight is appreciated . I have a sony da4es receiver , sony hd200 stb , jerrold cablebox , panasonic rp82 dvd , mitsubishi hsu500 vcr , radio shack coax switcher , velodyne subwoofer , fujitsu plasma ,and onkyo dxc600 cd changer. Since I currently use 9 different remotes I'm hoping a universal one can simplify things. I prefer a remote that can be held and operated with one hand and backlit.Would a learning remote be able to control all the functions from each of my current remotes? Also about a computer programmable type ; why would I want this or not? thanx in advance for any help

Computer progammable remotes allow you to make changes to the programming more easily. At least that's the intent.
There are remotes at $30-$15000 that will do what you want. You should give a price range. (actually, they could cost more than $15k)
Personally, I like the MX-500. $115 and up. Just becoming computer programmable.

What other functions are you looking for? what price are you looking for? What other functions are available and should I consider besides just using it to eliminate my current number of remotes? I'm more concerned with making a one time purchase that fits my needs but I also don't want to spend for things that I'm not going to use. Try to give some examples of what a $500 remote will do that a $50 or $100 one is unable to. Also which remote do you have and are you happy with it?

I thought you just program your current remote's commands and then your done possible changes: change of device (i.e. when you swap out your old device for a new one) change layout (i.e. you want to move a button to where you want) What other functions are available depends on the remote Try to give some examples of what a $500 remote will do that a $50 or $100 one is unable to Pronto/Marantz 5200 ... ... ... these are just some screen shots. Basically put anything where you want and make it do whatever you want also make it so people don't need to know where each CD is placed in your changer Harmony - activity based (so all the user needs to know is what they want to do) - You can download the TV listings so that you pick shows instead of channels HTM MX-700 PC programmable better macros then other push button remotes comes with the MX-200

Also which remote do you have and are you happy with it? Pronto TS-1000 one of the original Prontos, Yes I am happy with it, but thinking to upgrade to the TSU-3000 that is coming out early next year. Can't afford to go colour Harmony SST-745 happy with it, but would like some more hard buttons so I will probably upgrade SST-768 since they have an upgrade program. P.S. here are some picks Pronto TSU-2000 Marantz 5200 Pronto TSU-3000 will replace the Pronto TSU-2000 next year (supposedly end of January ) ---------------------- Harmony SST-768 Harmony SST-745 ----------------------- HTM MX-700 and MX-200 they come together

What Anthony said. And... Macros. One button press can do several things. Often easier to setup on a computer. (depending on the software) Backup of a complicated setup of several devices so if something strange happens you can redo your remote instantly. Addition of commands that the preprogrammed codes AND your original remote do not have. Like my Mits VCR eject button, which isn't on any remote I know of, but does exist in cyberspace.

Jimmy, there is a guy that is working on a device and software so that you can turn an MX-500 into a PC programmable remote. So if you like the 500 you bought and you want PC programming you can always buy that thing. On the negative side, when you add the two costs together it does bring it to the price of a Pronto

Jimmy, If the MX500 doesn't do everything you want, you could try stepping up to the PC programmabale 15-2116, which is $30 at Radio Shack, then you'll need a JP1 cable which is $18 at http://www.hovisdirect.comRob

Rob,
Awww gee, looked like anthony already had Jimmy's 115.00 spent. Of course later on he'll find out he'll need a ueic remote, like the 2116 and a cable to get his MX-500 working like he wants; or perhaps opt for the mega-bucks add-on anthony suggested to pc program his MX-500. Jim

Are there any differences between what each can or can not do??
