I am looking to purchase a universl remote for a system including the following components:

1) NEC 42MP2 Plasma Screen
2) Marantz SR8000 Tuner
3) Marantz VC5000 DVD Changer
4) JVC SVHS

I have been looking at the Theater Master MX-1000. I really like the remote, but am worried about the lack of ability to use discrete coding in the marcros.

Is there any way around this? Are there any other remotes I should consider? I am looking for a touch screen / hard button mix where I can create a very easy user friendly selection. I have looked at the RC5000 but am not sure I need that much functionality or complication. Any thoughts would be appreciated!

The only remotes that are going to generate the discretes you need are Pronto and OFA remotes. So pick what ever remote that you see fit. But then get a cheap ofa remote for the discretes.

The JVC VCR; device code 0067; discrete on-248; discrete off-247. That's a start for you.

What is OFA? Is that like the All-in-One from Radio Shack? Does that require learning the discretes to one remote and then teaching it to the remote you want to use? Thanks.

OFA= one-for-all, all-for-one are the Musketeers,:). Ofa & RS remotes have advanced codes, these are 3 digit codes for individual functions(234-play,135-PIP). You first find a working device code(4-digit), then find a key you don't need, Then you add a new function to that key via advanced code. Now you teach that command to your MX-1000 or what ever remote you pick.

How does the advanced code feature work? Where do I find the discrete codes? So you find the device code (4-digit) and then the discrete code (3-digit)? How do you integrate these two codes together?

The best place to find advanced codes is www.hifi-remote.com. Entering advanced codes depends on the remote.The newest remote is the RS 2116, here is how you enter codes;

1. hold set key
2. go to keymover,press select
3. screen says "from mode", select a mode(device)
4. screen says "from key",hit set(screen changes to synt)
5. key in advanced code, hit select
6. screen says "to mode", select a mode
7. screen says "to key" select desired key
8. screen says "success", exit set up

Peter,

The advance codes and device setup codes used, are already integrated together. A specific advance code (3 digit) will only perform a specific function with a specific device setup code (4 digit). An efc of 180 will NOT do the same thing in TV_0250 as in TV_0003. Thus, when you look up for a specific function, you first need to know what device setup code you're using. A good portion of the advance codes will already be mapped to buttons when you program the remote to use a specific device setup code. However, NOT ALL functions may be accounted for.
The beauty of the UEIC remotes, over most other "universal remotes" is there capability to have missing functions ADDED. Most other's you're just simply stuck with what they gave you. For ULTIMATE performance, your best option is a UEIC remote that's JP-1 Capable, then you can use your pc to more easily program your remote, add device setup codes that are missing, "modify" a device setup code to rearrange the button layout more to your liking by simply making a new device setup code and uploading it to your remote.
