I have the RCA RCU810 and the Theater Master MX500. I know the MX 500 cannot learn discrete codes without using another remote to 'teach' it. Can the RCU810 be used to learn discrete codes and teach the MX 500? If so, how is this done? Do I need to solder a JP1 connector to it? Thanks in advance.

yes, the 810 will learn discrete codes, but, like your MX-500 needs a remote to teach it as well. If you don't have a remote to teach the MX-500, where are you going to get one to do the same with the 810? The 810 is a learner, adding the JP-1 header isn't going to make it "learn" any better or worse than it already can.
Somehow I think you're using "learn" the wrong way. Learning is using one renmote which can emit signals, and they may be discrete or toggles, and the "Learner" then receives those IR signals stores their structure, then emits a "cloned" signal replicating the learned one.
You can program the 810,either with or without JP-1, to emit certain signals. Without JP-1 would depend on whether the device setup code is in the 810's database. With JP-1, if it isn't, you can put it in anyway. Whether or not discretes will work is more a function of whether the mfr of your device (TV, dvd, etc.) has allowed for those discretes in the unit's firmware. The remote doesn't, and can't force a unit to accept discretes, that was established by the mfr of the device, not the remote's mfr. IF (IF!!!!) the devices mfr did provide for discretes, you MITE get them with a preprogrammed code in your 810. However, if you can't get them this way, and they are provided for, then WITH JP-1 you can probably program the 810 to emit those discretes, and your MX-500 should be able to LEARN them from the 810.
It'd be best to find out whether those discretes even exist FIRST, either from the threads here, the pronto ccf files, Rob's site(www.hifi-remote.com under advance codes), or the files at the JP-1 group.
You didn't tell us what unit or device you're concerned about, so it's hard to make a general statement as to if those discretes exist or not. You could program the device setup code for your unit and see if the 810 emits the discretes you need. If it does, just learn them into your MX-500. If not, you'll have to do some research and decide how best to go.

Thanks Jim,
The devices I am trying to control discretes are not TOADs. A better question would be: does the 810 have the ability to accept these discrete codes directly? I have read about the RS and the One For All remotes that can accept codes directly. If the 810 cannot, how do you know which ones can? Thanks again.

Gregavi,
The RCU810 is made by the same people that make OFA and RS remotes, but the function you need, which is called "key mover" was not included in the menu system, so there's no way to program key moves on the remote.

However, if you add a JP1 connector to the remote, you can program them using JP1.

Hope that answers your original question.

Okay, I now have the RS 15-2104. Now how do I program discrete codes into it? I have searched the manual and didn't see any info on this.

Your remote and others I listed use advanced codes. These are three digit codes for individual functions(play-023,pip-167). First you need to find a working device code( four digit) for your equipment. Next go to Rob's sit at www.hifi-remote.com. Check his manual for the 15-1994, on how to input advanced codes. Also on his site you'll find list of advanced codes under device(tv) and device code(4 digit).
