Got my 1st 7500 to program today and nothing is going right!

My regular laptop with a realtively up to date ProntoPro Edit is in a repair shop for a couple of weeks. But, I have saved on seperate CD's (as well as 1 master back-up) about 20 customer #7000 files. So, I barrowed a latop from one of my guys downloaded off the net 2.1.7.0 and figured I would open one of these customer configs, make some slight changes & then down load it to the 7500.

Unfortunately, when I tryed to open a #7000 file from either the master back-up which was made just before laptop went in for repair OR from single disk back-ups that were made after each job over last 6 mos; I get the message: "The Parameter is incorrect." I ALSO GET THE SAME MESSAGE IF I DOWNLOAD 2.1.7.0 INTO MY HOME DESK TOP. Therefore, I know its not the lap top I barrowed. Also, the expected error of "device not compatiple" comes up if I try to download a 7000 file to a 7500.

At this point i went back and removed 2.1.7.0 and installed an older version from May 2004 which will open up the CD files but is NOT compatible with a 7500. i.e. there isn't any drop down in the save window for "save as" a 7500 file.

Finally, when I reinstall 2.1.7.0 I need to remove the older version, and become stuck not opening 7000 files. Yet, I can create a 7000 file in 2.1.7.0 and save it as a 7500 file and download it to the new 7500.

Finally, in the course of all of this I did get a mesage (twice) that said something about Microsoft Visual C +++ error when running older version but can't remember what I was doing when it popped up.

Any clue what I'm doing wrong?

Just for grins, if you copied the files from CD onto your hard disk, right-click and ensure that the files are not 'Read Only' under the Windows Properties dialog. Don't know if this will help but I've had no problems with 7000 files on the latest editor. Please let us know if this works.

With regard to this error, I had the opportunity to work with someone's PCF a while back that had 'Groups' that contained a single 'Item' and were causing some Access Violations (Unrecoverable Application Error - UAE) upon opening the PCF. The only way this could have occurred is through the use of an early version of the editor.

The quick solution was to scour the ConfigEdit.xml file and locate all groups that contained only 1 item. Once I had identified the 'Groups' in ConfigEdit.xml and traced them back to the page containing the 'Group'. I then 'Ungrouped' the items on the target page in PPENG for the fix.

not exactly sure where the configedit.xml is but tommarow, I'll get together with one of my associates and we'll look at this post while opening proedit on a laptop. Either way I'll post tommarow night & let you know how I made out.
In regaurds to sentance about an "early version", I hadelieved all along that proedit versions were backwards compatible. I guess this isn't a;ways true!?
Thanks - Chuch Jr.

There were early version of the software that allowed certain PCFs to become corrupted such as the group with only 1 item. As a result, the problem could have been following closely all along. If the file is not too big, please email it to me at my addy on profile as I'd also like to know what the problem might be. One final question. Was the file ever opened and saved with 2.1.4 or was it last modified on a version earlier than 2.1.4?

Lyndel - Its been a very busy weekend here in our office. But; in between chores, 2 of us sat down and figured out the problem with this file.

Origionally - we were getting the following messages from any prontoproeditNG file that was backed up(onto a CD) with an version that was earlier than 2.1.7.0:
If any pcf file on the CD was double clicked from the window showing files backed up onto the Cd; 2.1.7.0 would open up & we would get an error box with the title = Microsoft Visual C++ runtime library that had a message showing the file location and an error stating "Abnormal Program Termination" cilcking OK in the error box would close the error box & 2.1.7.0.
If 2.1.7.0 was opened 1st and the we attempted to open the file directly from the CD, we would get an error message that = "The Parameter is incorrect"

We then began looking at the properties of the files on th CD vs the sample & test files we created on the harddrive that had no problem opening with 2.1.7.0. WE FOUND THAT THE FILES ON THE CD WERE "READ ONLY" FILES AND THE FILES ON THE HARDDRIVE WERE NOT! Since windows would not allow us to change this property on this CD file because it was not a rewritable disc, we copied the file into my documents, then uncheked the read only box, then had NO TROUBLE opening the copied file. After opening we saved it as a 7500 file!

Thanks for your insight! Hopefully thhis helps you.

Files written to a non-rewritable CD are always marked Read Only and that attribute is carried over when copied back to the hard drive.

Wow! My original hunch was right. The file must NOT be read-only.
