I downloaded the new 7000 editor today. I first uninstalled old version, rebooted, unzipped and installed new editor. After working on my PCF for 2 or 3 hours I placed Pronto into dock and instead of the usual double tone upon making contact, I got more of a triple tone. At first I thought, "Oh, they even changed the sound", but upon hitting the download icon I got the error "device is not connected properly". I rebooted, checked USB at both ends, etc, etc. Everything earlier tonight was working fine until the new install. Does the new editor version require a firmware update?

The first time I rebooted my computer after installing the new editor I discovered that the usb driver was no longer installed properly. This is most likely what is going on in your case as well.
You will need to bring up Device Manager found on the Hardware tab of the System Properties applet to check the device driver for the remote which is called, "Philips Pronto NG USB Driver". Most likely you will see it there in the device tree with a yellow exclamation point meaning that the driver is no longer working properly. If this is the case you will need to update the driver.
To update the driver ... 1) Right click on the device driver and choose "Update Driver ...". 2) Choose "Install from a list or specified location (Advanced)", 3) Ensure a check mark is in the box allowing a folder path to be specified, then browse to the appropriate drivers directory for the remote found under the folder you installed PPENG to, then hit next.
(Default folder path should be ... C:\Program Files\Philips\ProntoProEdit NG\Drivers\Win2KXPME)
The driver should then be updated. When this process completes you should see the driver, "Philips Pronto NG USB Driver" under the Universal Serial Bus controllers section of the tree without that yellow exclamation point, an indication that the device driver is now installed properly.
(Please be aware that when accessing Device Manager if you are first prompted with a message stating that you do not have sufficient permissions to install/uninstall hardware this means you are not currently logged into windows with admin rights. You will need to log off windows at that point and either log in with the user ID, "Adminstrator", or any other user ID you have available which is included in the local admin group. Once logged into windows with admin rights you will be able to proceed with updating the device driver for the remote if that needs to be done.)

For future reference, I typically post problems with new software on threads opened by the ProntoTeam. I posted this problem there on Sunday night just as I was sending an email to Philips. I also posted a second thread here (still on page 1 of this forum). [Link: remotecentral.com]

I personally would go with the have disk option as well Lyndel. :-) It was just too many additional steps to outline. I got lazy. :-P I forgot you posted the steps for people as well. Doh!
I support Olympus digital voice recorders for work among other things and am constantly reinstalling usb drivers on clients computers. Plug and play has come a long way all things considered.
