Is it possible to program a Casablanca "Zephair" floor fan through my Pronto Pro 7000 remote control? The fan has three speeds. What would I need to buy in order for the fan to be receptive to the remote control? Secondly, how would I go about finding the IR codes for fan?

Thanks -

If the fan comes with an IR remote, all you need to do is learn the codes into your Pronto.

If not, you might be able to use X10 switching. You would need an iR543 device (about $23 at X10.com) to convert Pronto IR to X10 signals, and the appropriate X10 switches. It will depend on the kind of circuitry used by the fan to handle switching speeds. You might want to talk to the tech support people at X10.com. They are very good.

Unfortunately, the fan does not come with a remote. I've taken your suggestion and followed up with an e-mail to X10 customer support. Waiting for a response.

It's been a week and still no reply from X10 customer support, except for the on-going X10 newsletters (Jane, stop this crazy thing!). I welcome any further suggestions.

Since it's not a remote controllable fan your options are limited.

In addition to the IR543 you could use an appliance module for simple on/off. Obviously there will be NO WAY to use the fan's 3 built in speeds by remote, and I can't think of any system for speed controlling a plug-in non-lighting device that would be to code. Any device designed to "dim" a motor load would be wired-in, not plug-in.

That's true, but you should be able to do it by rewiring the switching that controls the speed selection and running each selection pair to an X10 switching module. Kind of klugey I will admit, and maybe not to code as Daniel points out, but it probably can be done. I did it to a multispeed air filter.
