It seems to me that Philips are either unable or unwilling to solve this problem, but what is worse, they seem completely uninterested in their customers.

Perhaps we need to start writing letters to the hifi and home cinema press rather than philips customer support. Maybe then we will start getting some action.

I was able to put my 3000 working again. Well here it goes:

If the touchscren is not reponding the ribbon cable lost the contact with the touchscreen panel. If you rub it it maybe work but is it will problaby lost contact again. I notice in my pronto only the second contact was broken (4 contacts). I also notice 3 holes on the board in front of the ribon (these were used in old 3000 to put the IR learn reciver). So I solded an hard wire (from a resistence of an eletric shower) in a way it will mantain pressure on the contact. It´s ugly but Is working for now. If want pics e-mail me.

These things must be "secretly programmed" to fail at a certain time. My TSU-3000 has worked flawlessly for almost 4 years. Just quit working out of the blue yesterday. Unresponsive screen, hard buttons still work, etc. Sounds like exactly the same problem.

Luckily we have a great resource here with this forum, so I'm going home tonight to hopefully take it apart, clean the contacts and be back in business!!

Guys, try to fold the ribon cable of the touchscreen. This is fixing the problem in some cases.

I wanted to follow up and share my recent success with you all. I took apart my TSU-3000 last night using the excellent instructions in this thread. Everything was exactly as mentioned. I pressed down on the contacts with a needle and reassembled. The thing works like a champ again!

Way to go! And you know what the best part was, besides getting your TSU-3000 up and running, it didn't cost you anything. Hard to Image.

Here is another SBC RU-950 success story. After the typical chain of events (screen buttons not responding, re-flashing, calibration error) I've tried first cleaning the contacts of the ribbon cable at the PCB side, then rubbing the four contact points on top of the touchscreen. It didn't help. Then I've pressed on the contacts with a needle in a couple of points and voila- it worked! Hopefully it will last for some time; if not, I'll detach the cable to experiment with some conductive glue. Thanks guys for your excellent hints!

P.S. My previous remote (SBC RU-940) died after 3 years of use with a (try a guess) contact problem which looked like a microscopic crack in a PCB. Some wise guy said that electronics was a science about contacts...

Screen lockup - Here's what worked for me

CLEAN THE SCREEN - I mean really clean the screen. You need to take off the blue cover and clean the edge of the screen. Over time stuff (dust, grease, wine, and food) will accumulate around the edge of the screen and get trapped under the blue plastic surround. I'm not talking chunks of food it may be a smear of liquid that has dried. You need to look closly I used a magnifing glass. This will interfere with the sensitivity of the screen. Note that there are conductive metal strips that run round the outside of the screen just under the blue plastic surround.

I cleaned all round the edge of the screen after removing the blue cover and my tsu3000 works like new. I mean it. I had no problems calibrating the screen and problems getting the smaller buttons to respond without having to repeatedly press them have gone away.

My theory is that overtime gunk can build up around the edge of the screen which explains why this problem affects tsu3000 after a couple of years of use.
Also, most of the solutions that have been suggested in previous threads (such as cleaning ribbon cables and contact points) that have met with some success all involved removing the screen surround. I suspect this removed some of the gunk and resulted in the screen working again.

I do believe that Philips is aware of the solution but they are not going to ask people to take the thing apart and do their own repair. That would be like FORD sending you the part and asking you to fit it instead of issuing a recall.

One other important point don’t always expect the screen to work after cleaning, you may need to recalibrate the screen. I also downloaded the latest firmware which forces you into the calibration screened. I had previously downloaded the latest firmware before I cleaned the screen and that had not fixed the problem so I knew it was not a Firmware issue. But that was the easiest way to recalibrate the screen.

There is a reference with the new firmware that this fixes the screen lockup issues. I think they have adjusted the sensitivity of the screen which may help if the build up of gunk is not to severe. However, over time it will eventually lockup or not respond to the right button press and then you need to clean the screen.

I have not included instructions for removing the screen surround they are in previous threads.

I was almost at the point of trashing this unit. But stick with it and let me know if you have any success.

Good Luck.
