Can anyone recommend an IR light switch (dimmable) to replace an existing standard one?

Iain,

I use the Lutron Spacer System components and the nice part is they are IR, not RF. Available in the US in Home Depot and similar home stores. The more sophisticated Spacer Compoents are only available through a decent lighting stores in the states. They have a wide variety of components.

I also see a several configs in the Files Area, which offer Lutron controls and there are some codes in the internal DB. I speak of US DB, have not seen the Euro DB.

If Lutron Spacer is IR, does the Pronto 7000 need to be aimed at them? What if they are on a wall opposite the TV setup. Will the Pronto hit them?

I don't suppose they are available in the UK?

The Spacer dimer is IR so you either need to get line of site between your Pronto and the dimmer itself, bounce the IR signal off walls/ceilings to it or install an IR extender to transmit the IR signal to it.

Else you are left with RF (read need a separate RF remote) or X10 using an IR to X10 Gatewag like the IR543.

Brian

These have worked great for me. They are a lot cheaper than the Lutrons. They only have a one way switch though.

There are no scene programming or anything with them. They are just a simple dimmer. You hold the button down to dim or brighten, but it's good enough for me.

I just checked the website, and they charge an ungodly amount to ship overseas. You'd probably be better off finding a lutron dealer in Europe or on the web with better shipping prices.

Go to www.lutron.com and search for dealers in the UK. There are about a million of them.

The Lutron Spacer also has an IR blaster option, it clips onto the back of the switch and controls it. You need to run it through walls though, here is a pdf, check out page 11:
