I'm likely going with a new 3000 but I can't shell out the dough for the docking station just yet, though I'll be getting it at some point.
With the new firmware what kind of battery life can i expect with reg or rechargables?

With standard batteries (pretty bad ones mind you), I get about 2 weeks on the new firmware. I bought 480 batteries on eBay for $10. Go have a look, you may find something.
