I need help with connection issues between my windows 98 machine and the 3000 remote. When I go to download from NG the application says the remote is not connected. I hooked up a digital camera to same connection and the computer recognized it, no problem. I tried resetting the remote and hitting a button to wake the remote before download but it did'nt help. Any remedies or thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
thanks
Bill

You will need to be running Win98SX in order to use ProntoEdit on the TSU3000. This has been discussed many times here, and if you so a search, there are alot of entries in the forum. You can also see some info in the files area for PC software for the NG, or try and follow this link. [Link: remotecentral.com]

This may help, though it's not specific to W98...

Whenever the PC Application has denied any knowledge of the Remote-Control Unit, I've had to do a manual Reset of the unit: that is, stick a paper-clip in the 'Reset' hole next to the battery.  That has always fixed things, so far.
But I'm coming to the conclusion that Pronto hard, firm and software are all rather unreliable and unpredictable.

He meant SE. :-)

Are you running a PC with Windows 98 or emulating it on a Mac?

OK, so I have the appropriate OS, what can I do next to get my remote to be recognized? I think I've tried the easy remidies like reset, but I'm not sure what to do now.

Are you using a PC running Windows, or emulating it on a Mac? Emulating Windows doesn't seem to work that well with the Pronto NG's USB communications.

If a PC, does it detect anything when you connect the remote? Have you applied the latest USB-related patches? Can you learn codes through the remote? Are you using the latest version of ProntoEdit NG? Have you tried the firmware update program?

More information would help...

Also do not connect to a USB hub. Connect directly to a USB port on your computer.

keep your usb link connected.
when you get the "remote not connected" message, remove one of the batteries(or the battery pack connector if using DS300)no need to wait for any amount of time to pass, just plug the battery right back in. then proceed as normal.
You may have to do this every time you download to the device, or even when you want to learn code direct to PC/peng via the device. don't ask me why. I just know it works for me.

thanks for the input, I am running off a pc. I will try the battery trick. I can learn codes through the remote (you mean remote to remote, right?) I am also having problems teaching the cursor commands, is there a trick to getting this to work. It beeps as though it is learning a command but it does not work on the equipment. I am not in the toggle page/device mode either. It should operate my equipment but it's a no go. So far I have had the 1000, 2000 and now the 3000, and it seems with each upgrade it goes downhill. Quite frustrated at this point.
Thanks much
Bill

I meant in the ProntoEdit software (it captures codes through a connected remote). From your response it also sounds like you don't have the latest firmware, since learning codes on the cursor buttons is a known issue with older firmware. I'd try the firmware update program, see if that can find the remote.

It's kind of a catch-22, I can't load new firmware unless the remote is recognized by my computer. I am sending back the remote today for a refund. Also, the docking station I purchased was dead out of the box. Philips has good ideas but lousy QC.
thanks to all

Well, you see, that's the thing... you hadn't answered whether the computer saw anything when you plugged the remote in (Windows makes a sound and a new devices should appear in "System"). There can be various levels of communications problems, from "computer doesn't see the remote at all" to "everything looks file but PENG just won't work". If the computer *does* see something, then the firmware program (which is not a part of ProntoEdit) might work.

Chances are that this is a computer-specific problem... not to say that the remote shouldn't work perfectly on your PC, but the Pronto NG has somewhat strict hardware requirements and certain nuances that can make it difficult to get working on older PCs (in terms of the Pronto NG, Win98 is considered an "older PC").

Are you up to date with Windows Updates? There are some USB fixes in there that might help you.
