after playing a bit with PENG, I get the feeling that the 3000 is more closely related to the NEO then the 2000. What do you think?

Certainly it borrows concepts from the Neo and from NeoEdit, but that's hardly surprising - the Neo is a newer design than the Pronto 2000.

To be honest, I always thought that PE was superior to NE. But that was not the reason that I started this thread. At first since the 3000 was supposed to replace the 2000 I thought the PCF would have been based on CCF, but from quick first view, it seems to be based on NCF.

Again, newer technology - an XML-based configuration has a lot of advantages in that there are plenty of tools out there which can manipulate XML documents readily. This should result in us getting PCF tools much more quickly than it took for CCF tools to appear.

Speaking of tools, my big question at this point is: how do things look for a Pronto 3000 version of Tonto? Stewart, any thoughts?

I realize that USB may pose an significant issue, but I'd happily accept uploading and downloading via ProntoEdit while using Tonto to do the editing if that's what it takes.

I would assume, it means a big rewrite for Stewart. I agree XML might be simpler to get to the info, but

1) I don't know if XML makes programming any simpler. A few tools were using an XML file created by the decompiler, so you still need to know what everything means. XML is almost like saying text.

2) all the Pronto tools might be useless, someone would need to compare NCF unzipped XML, PCF unzipped XML and CCF decompiled XML

3) does it use Pronto HEX for IR codes or does it use NEO HEX. Much info on Pronto HEX, not much on NEO hex.

I assume it is a big rewrite as well - but the question is "how big"?

As to the other questions:

1) XML may make understanding the format a bit simpler because of the "wordiness" of XML data, which will be easier than dealing with a binary format. Once it's understood, it makes it easier to create tools which do things like supernudelist (i.e. create pages of buttons for CD changers). XML was designed for this kind of usage, after all.

2) I think it is a given that current Pronto tools are useless (except to the degree that they can generate a CCF which can be imported into ProntoEdit NG). My point is that if we are switching to a new format, an XML-based format is a good one to switch to.

3) I'm not an IR expert, but I did a quick trial. I compared the power code for my Panasonic DVD player in ProntoEdit 4 and in ProntoEdit NG (after importing from the PE4 CCF, of course), and the codes were similar but not quite identical.

Anyone know what the significance of this might be?

The format looks the same

learnt frequency length of one time code length of repeat

the last part is the wait time between repeats. Why it is lengthened I don't know. (Maybe there is a difference how the 3000 deals with repeats and it is meant as a correction.)

I've opted not to tackle the 3000 in Tonto at the moment. The XML/ZIP format is not so difficult. It's the issues of upload/download and the 'native' format of the file on the remote (which would *never* be XML/ZIP on an embedded system). Without upload/download you still have to boot Windows and run PE. One of the main reasons I started Tonto was to avoid this.

Even though it's a simple serial connection, the upload/download feature has still been the hardest thing to nail down in Tonto.

It's obviously your call, Stewart, but speaking just for myself - even "editing only" support for the 3000 would be worth having. ProntoEdit NG is, to my eyes, better than PE4, but still lacks a lot of the nice "little" things Tonto has.
