I cannot get my Pronto to learn IR codes for my Marantz outboard AC-3 decoder (same codes as the H-K decoder). I've read through the FAQ which didn't give me any ideas to correct. I've also programmed the Pronto extensively, so I've got all of the obvious problems out of the way (e.g. the cable and serial port work, I'm using the bottom of the remote, etc).

The source IR codes are also clean since they're coming from a Marantz remote (RC-2000). When I try to learn the Marantz codes, they come through as "RC 5 16 **" type with a fairly short hex stream. These RC5 codes don't work at all. If a try to learn about 20-30 times, I'll get 1 or 2 through a "LEARNED" type (not RC5), but those barely work.

Any ideas?

How convenient, I just checked the files section and saw that Michael Durand posted codes to this device (in the LEARNED format) 6 days ago. I'll give those a try, but I'd still like to hear your feedback on how to learn these difficult codes.

RC5 codes can sometimes be extremely difficult to learn. Michael Durand probably went through hell to get them all in. This is because the Pronto/RC5000 recognizes some RC5 codes but not all. If you send me a model number, I will try to get a list of codes and generate a clean panel of RC5 buttons via RC5000Setup's RC5 code generator (which can generate all RC5, RC5 extention and RC6 codes perfectly).

I forgot to mention the reason you might want "clean" codes.

A "Learned" version of an RC5 code might work with a short tap but not when you press and hold the button or it might work intermittently since a learned code CANNOT replicate "toggle bits". All RC5, RC5extension and RC6 codes actually toggle a bit on and off, each time the button is pressed and continue to toggle on and off as the button is pressed and held.

A "generated" version will work exactly the way the original remote control did. It produces a perfect code and always replicates the correct "toggle bit" behavior.

The RC5 code generator requires that you have a list of the codes for the particular model/manufacturer. Not all component manufacturer's have a list to give you. Many manufacturers are convinced that this is proprietary engineering information and do not give it out. Some do (Krell, Polk Audio and Marantz are all aware of the virtues of public sharing).

I'm working on getting the list. I'll let you know in a few days what's going on. Why don't you make a point of emailing me on thursday.
