Can not store IR while in ProntoEdit?

I just got my pronto- and have been "setting it up" for almost 2 days... Too many graphic designs to choose from- and too many options... My son (11 yrs) has advised me that unless I leave it alone for a short time and try USING IT, I'm never gonna figure out how I'm going to like it- and which setup to keep ! :) Young minds at work today- eh?

ANYWAY- The one thing I've learned (no phun intended) is while I've got ProntoEdit up and running- have the pronto connected, and when in the ACTION screen for a button- and click on LEARN IR, point the original remote at the back of the pronto, and the sw says LEARNED (or whatever it says), that command actually doesn't work...?!?!

What I've had to do is make the template, send it to the pronto, then take the pronto back downstairs (argh!), go into the learn mode, and LEARN that button manually - without the use of my PC...? WHY IS THIS!?!?!!!

I'm using aliases wherever possible to conserve memory- but this is taking me much longer than I originally had hoped! Why can the pronto *NOT* learn while docked with ProntoEdit software? Am I doing something wrong is this a limitation of the software??? HELP - and THANKS IN ADVANCE!

Double-click on "Learned" to view the learned IR code. Is there a code there? If so, is the code 3 lines or less? If yes, you are probably not holding the button long enough on the remote you are learning from so the Pronto is not learning the complete IR code.

Tom: I've experienced the "ProntoEdit won't learn properly but Pronto will" phenominum on one or two buttons, but not all of them! What equipment are you trying to learn, and exactly how are you learning them?

Just to comment,

it was my understanding that while aliases are nice, they don't really conserve memory because the pronto only stores identical items(bmp's & IR codes) once. So while aliases are nice and they simplify some things, they don't really save space.

Brian-
While I agree with you mostly, if you "learn" two identical buttons and then go view the hex code for them, it is my opinion that a lot of the time the code will be a little different(longer, shorter, etc) depending on how long you hold the button etc. So in my opinion, it can't hurt to use aliases. Just my $.02. Experts?

Brian,

Firstly, the Pronto itself does not check for equal IR codes, only ProntoEdit does. Secondly, ProntoEdit only looks for IR codes that are exactly the same, and learning a code again will usually not give exactly the same result.

So, although you are right when you say that aliases don't really save space compared to assigning IR codes directly, this is only true in general if the directly assigned IR codes are created by copying a single IR hex dump.

By the way, ProntoEdit also looks for identical strings when saving a CCF.

Jan

Like Tom, I've not had luck with training the Pronto while working with ProntoEdit. And it happened for all my buttons despite the software telling me that all was OK. And I am holding down the source button (on my various remotes) no longer/shorter than when I train it without ProntoEdit.

Basically, I put in the buttons etc., then unplug it and train seperately. Minor but still a niggle.

I've tried different lengths of time to hold the button- and I've had buttons not work even after LEARNING them directly with pronto not hooked up to prontoedit.. My batteries may be weak in the original controls- Thats one thing I've noticed..

But since all this programming of the Pronto- I've got WAY too many templates and stuff in there.. I'm only controlling 7 devices and only have about 30% of free memory- I NEED TO CLEAN HOUSE (so to speak)... I love the tabs across the top!!!

ANYWAY- If/when I figure out why this isnt working properly. I'll post.

I've encountered this before too...some buttons are learnt properly, others not...Someone somewhere said that the best way is to learn directly with the Pronto (not through ProntoEdit). So I defined my panels and buttons, download them to the Pronto, and go into learn mode, learn all the buttons, then upload back into ProntoEdit to save and make it look pretty.

I see that Tom seems to be doing this anyway...but he had to go upstairs/downstairs between 'learning sessions'. Suggestion for that is to take the original remotes upstairs. :-)
