I wonder...

Marantz makes a "tweaked" version of the Philips 9905 called the HD-6400W. There's not a whole lot of information on this model, but it looks identical to the 9905 and has a MSRP of 12K (versus 10K for the Philips). Do you suppose the Marantz unit has discrete codes for video inputs? Might explain the additional 2K in MSRP :b

This whole thing has me so pissed, I'm thinking of returning the set on principal alone. I can't beleive Philips did something this stupid!

LOL, $2000 for discrete codes. But I wouldn't bet on it.

Everything Marantz markets seems to be higher in cost than the equivalent original, so it may be pretty much the same thing. I don't see any references to that model number here on remotecentral. Perhaps if someone reading this has a ccf specfically for that model they could post or let us know? please????

Yep, $2k for discretes is a little on the pricey side, to be sure.

I agree, I've been seriously considering returning the set for that reason and the fact that they stupidly didn't include a 'home theatre' mode like Mitsubishi's and others have which completely separates the outputs from inputs letting you easily control everything from an external box, but still have a useful program source as one of the inputs. If it weren't for the fact in has the best (most detailed) hdtv picture I've seen on any set...

AFAIK, The Marantz HD-6400 is no longer available (and it didn't have the commands you wanted either).

Can the Smart Picture be used to define input, how about the factory default?

Anthony:

Unfortunately, it can't. The 9905's “Smart Picture” (oxymoron) feature allows you to configure 5 user defined audio (bass, treble, balance, stereo, etc.) and video (color, tint, brightness, picture, sharpness, etc.) preferences settings. Alas, no video input preferences are available.

Each user defined "Smart Picture" setting can be labeled with an 8 character description. A sixth non-configurable setting labeled "Factory Settings" returns the set's audio and video user controls to default values.

Oddly, the only "Smart Picture" setting accessible directly via the remote code is the "Factory Settings" option. Odder still, is that the "Factory Settings" responds to code RC5 0 57—the one typically used as Aux2 on other Philips models—go figure.

Jcmitch:

Are you sure? The HD-6400W was to be Marantz’s flagship RPTV. It was announced at CES 2000 in January and AFAIK, became available only a couple of months ago. I don’t understand why they would have pulled the plug so quickly.

A little more information on trying to locate the discrete codes for video inputs on the Philips 9905. I wrote a little perl script that would generate a full table of rc5 codes based on criteria I set. It produces an output that can be dropped right into IRPanels to produce a test CCF for required codes. Well, it's a little of a kludge but it accomplishes what I wanted. I'll post the resulting test ccf if anyone wants it.

I have tried each command sequence in rc5 0 0-127 to rc5 6 0-127 with no luck. This sets commands bounce around between RC5 0 and RC5 3 routinely so I thought maybe there were others.

How many other device codes (above 6) are in use, does anyone know? I also tried some RC6 sequences but the set doesn't even see those. Haven't tried RC5x as of yet.

With all the other discretes the set has, it's hard to imagine there are none for video in, so I'm assuming they're still there waiting to be found! :-)

Bill,

Any luck? I have no idea how many device codes Philips uses but would be happy to help test if you want to post test ccf's.

Apparently Marantz was having problems manufacturing the HD-6400W, but rumor has it they may come out with a second version, minus the TV tuner. The Marantz comes with the RC5000i (a normal one) but, unfortunately, no discrete input codes.

You'd think Marantz were trying to keep the HD-6400W a secret! There's still no information on their web site regarding this model and I'm still waiting for a response to the email inquiry I sent them over 2 months ago.

jcmitch,

Thanks, but 2 months ago I bought a Philips 64PH9905 instead (basically the same model).

My point was that Marantz has done nothing to market this set. There's nothing on their site, nothing on the net to speak of, and virtually no one (dealers included) knows anything about this model. It makes me wonder why they even have it in their line up.

Bill Blue,

Bad news regarding discrete video input mode codes. I had a phone conversation with a Philips Service Specialist last week. He confirmed that the discrete codes do not exist and will not exist on future incarnaitons of this chassis.

Awesome picture aside, I'm still trying to decide whether to keep it or return it.
