I have an RCA 5451 DSS system. Can the Pronto learn the DSS remote?? I thought the DSS remote was radio-frequency based. I assume DSS="DBS" on the pronto and learning the DSS remote is no problem. am I correct????

The pronto will only learn infared-controlled devices, so if your DSS is RF controlled it won't work with it. Many people are finding a simular problem, but as of now there's not much you can do.

I don't currently have DSS, but I'm planning to get it. Are you saying that there are some DSS units that are IR controlled, and some that are RF controlled? If so, is there an easy way to tell the difference? Are all of the newer DSS units RF instead of IR, or do some have both?

I really don't want to spend $400 on a remote if I won't be able to use it for DSS, but if I can make the right DSS decision in advance, can I head off this incompatibility?

I don't know - something like this will most likely be mentioned in the specs, like "UHF Remote" or "control it from anywhere in the house - even through walls". It's up to the particular unit.

And to further complicate matters, some DBS receivers will receive both IR and UHF, in order to accomodate the included remote (UHF) and any universal remote you might add.

Best bet is the manual. If you know specifically what model you're looking at, let me know, and I'll find out for you.

I don't know of a DSS receiver that is only RF. All the units I know of are switchable between RF and IR. On my Sony SAT-A3, it's a configuration option on the setup menu. Pronto can learn the IR codes of a DSS receiver that is set up for IR control, but it cannot learn RF codes. Configure your DSS receiver for IR control and you'll be fine - works great for me.

If you need control of the DSS receiver in a remote room, I'd recommend the 'PowerMid' IR remote extenders, which are also OEM'd by RCA and Panasonic. You'll get control of everything remotely, not just the DSS receiver. Again, mine works well (I have the Panasonic branded version, since I prefered the 'cone' styling to the PowerMid's 'Pyramid' styling)

Hey, that's good news. I wasn't aware that most if not all DSS receivers could handle both IR/RF. From all the messages I've seen of folks complaining about their RF DSS units, I'm guessing that most only come with RF remotes, which make it impossible to learn any possible IR codes. Or perhaps the problem is simply that no one reads their manuals... :-)

No-one ever reads the manual until they've fried the unit doing the thing it tells them very clearly in the manual not to do :-) My partner says the only cure is estrogen :-)

There's a (politically incorrect) acronym in the retail industry, 'ESTO returns'. ESTO stands for 'equipment superior to operator'. A somewhat cynical view, but next time you see 'no fault found', pity the poor R&D engineer who has to design something to be 'obvious' to millions of people across scores of cultures, each of which thinks differently :-)
