The remote for my Denon 3200 receiver is a learning remote that also has the ability to store 2 macros. I have a macro set up to turn on my VCR, Denon, and TV. This makes it easy for my wife or kids with a single keystroke to watch TV with surround sound.

The problem is that most electronic components use the same IR command to turn off and on a component. For example, if my Denon is already on from listening to a CD and one of my kids hits the macro button, the TV and VCR go on but the Denon goes off.

I know that a system like the Crestron has the ability to sense if an electronic product is on and if it is, it will not turn it off with a macro, if that piece of equipment needs to be on. Of course the Crestron is $2,000.

Is there any way to get a product like the Pronto to do this? I am guessing the answer is no, but it cannot hurt to ask.

Thanks
Dave

I do know that some devices do have addition IR codes to explicity turn something on or explicity off versus toggle it. How you get those IR codes I don't know.

Another brute force method would be to add a power control unit like the new panamax and tell the panamax to shut everything off with an IR command (done via AC power) and back on. Then everything is in a known state so you can toggle what you need on. I'm not saying this is the best solution but just a thought.

None of the current remotes "sense" what state the unit is in - I don't believe the old ones did either. I never owned one, but my guess is they just remembered what you last did. (Okay, POWER's been pressed, unit must be on now... POWER again, unit must be off).

Simplest routine is to create two macros, 1) turn system on 2) turn system off. Whether your devices use explicit or toggled commands, this should work fine, though you can only turn on or off a set number of devices.

Daniel,

The idea of creating two macros, one to turn on and another to turn off sounds like a solution but I do not think it will work. If you need three components on to watch a DVD (receiver, DVD player, and TV) and one of these three is already on (lets say the receiver), as soon as you start the macro to watch a DVD, the DVD player and TV will turn on but the receiver will turn off.

What I think these devices need is seperate IR codes for on and off. I do not think they have this, just a toggle to turn them on when off and off when on.

Would be interesting to know, if Take Control with its included list of IR-Codes includes specific "on" and "off" signals for most devices. I hardly think it does have these signals....

I've got four macros: Turn System On, Turn System Off, Watch a DVD, Return from DVD. They cover everything I need.

i have same... watch tv or watch dvd or shut all off. my shutoff command automatically sets up in tv mode when it comes back on. if you want to watch dvd once tv is on you have to go to dvd device which auto changes your preamp for dvd.

I was able to create separate On/Off macros even though my OEM remotes did not support it. I retreived the separte ON and OFF commands for most of my equipment from a cheap ONE-FOR-ALL brand remote. Even though my original OEM remote(s) just had an on/off toggle, this ONE-FOR-ALL had codes which would send only "ON" or "OFF" as well. These codes were accessed through the undocumented programming feature described by their tech support and web page. Once you know the 3 digit code for the command, the ONE-FOR-ALL will emmit it by pushing the "Magic" button followed by the 3 digit sequence.

Steve, did you get the direct access codes via
email or via a dialup help line? I
emailed them a couple days go for codes
and no response yet. I didn't expect they'd
have seperate on /off codes... good news. I've
been able to teach my Pronto direct Video Input
codes for my Onkyo receiver from an old Sony
uni-remote, the OEM just had video+/video-.
Still hope to get direct access to RPTV inputs
and maybe direct receiver sound mode codes
as well.

1. What specific One-For-All remote control model number did you get?

2. What equipment do you have that you've been able to use the separate on/off codes with?

We are just about to incorporporate the Pronto into our home theater automation package. It consists of a smartlinc houselinc(pc programable), an IR/X-10 receiver, and the Pronto. It's really very reliable. The Houselinc has probes to monitor the absolute state of the equipment and is in "charge" of power commands. The Pronto sends the macro to the IR to X-10 translator which is then passed to the houselinc for logic state verification and subsequent firing of the IR code, if it should be fired based on the equipment state. Of course we also control lighting and many other things via the houselinc. You may be interested to know that at least one other touchscreen provider is looking at houselinc probes to monitor equipment power status in their systems for the same reason. There are a few mfrs that have released their explicit codes (if they exist) but most won't admit that they exist, even if they do. I hope this helps.

Scott,

Can you give us more information about Houselinc?
Where can it be purchased, cost, etc? It sounds like exactly what I am looking for to figure out the state (on or off) of each piece of equipment. This couple with the Pronto sounds great.

Scott,
Houselinc is manufactured by SmartLinc in Irvine, CA. The reason I'm familiar is that we are custom installation dealer and use their products. They are great people with a great mission. They do not sell direct, only through dealers. Have a look at the products at www.smartlinc.com
I think you'll like what you see.
If I can be of any help, let me know.

I was able to get codes for my ONE-FOR-ALL-8 through both e-mail and phone support. Check out [Link: oneforall.com]. You can now get them online for all the differnet models.

Good luck,
Steve

Oooops. My mistake. The setup codes for the ON-FOR-ALL remotes listed at: [Link: oneforall.com] are just the codes to configure the ENTIRE device. To get the specific function codes you will need to call or email tech support. You have to tell them which of the listed DEVICE codes controls your device, then they will email you all the function codes for that device. I got good response from them, though it was a couple years back. Unfortunately, this probably means that you have to actually buy the remote before you'll know whether or not you can get the desired codes (can you say good return policy?).
