I recently asked about buying the battery pack or just using alkaline batteries, and I was told it depended on how long I set the backlighting timeout for! Can someone explain? Is this how long it stays on from the time you turn it on, or how long it stays on after you lay it down and stop using it? Thanks!

The timeout is how long the remote must be inactive -- i.e. you do nothing to it -- before the light turns off. You'll find the screen is a lot easier to see with the backlight on at all times.
