If you search around on this site you can probably find some messages about the differences in the Philips and Marantz models. Back a couple of months ago there was a lot of complaining because Marantz was not as forthcoming with firmware updates. I think the major argument was about paying a higher price for the Marantz and not having some of the functionality of the Philips Pronto. Since then I think they have fixed most of the differences.

Another thing to consider is the Marantz does have a longer warranty. I have had my Pronto over a year and have had no problems with it. Most problems with the two devices I have heard on this site occur when someone cracks the screen. Initially Philips and Marantz would say too bad, buy another one. Since then they will let you get a refurbished unit for a price. This kind of accident is not covered by the warranty since it considered to be caused by the user.

As far as I have heard the Pronto and RC5000 are almost exactly the same device, made by the same company, with different warranties. Since I haven't heard many people encountering problems actually covered by the warranty I would stick with the lower cost, more readily software upgraded, Philips Pronto.

There will be a 2mb Pronto, but it hasn't been announced yet. Or maybe it has; as you can see I'm not at CEDIA. :-(

50 remotes? If you've got that much equipment and money buy the pronto now and the color one later.

You could throw all your remotes away and buy loads of bamboo sticks to operate your various equipment. I must admit I had the same problem wondering whether to repond to your question....should I ...or shan't I !?!

Daniel,

Due to your celebrity status your private life is open to public scrutiny, so I'll ask... WHY aren't you at CEDIA where you belong?!!

Celebrity status? Hmmm, last time I checked the contract for "The Remoteman of Alcatraz" still hadn't come through...

Ah, I didn't know you were incarcerated! Sorry about that. No wonder you describe your listening area as being so small. I guess there's a lot we don't know about our RC host. You were such a cute kid, what happened to you?

LOL... sorry, probably a poor choice of a movie title to spoof. :-) I didn't go because I didn't think to book in time. It's a small town. I'll be at CES '01 though.
