I'll soon be purchasing the Pronto T-1000 from an Internet etailer for a very competitive price. A high end audio/video dealer in my city said they will program it for me so that it will work with all my different remotes. Of course there will be a charge for this service. Since I've never programmed a remote before, do you think it would be money well spent or I should try to do it myself? I consider myself to be somewhat computer literate and have already downloaded Prontoedit so that I may customize it if I so choose.

Easy answer Do it yourself!!! Gee easy money for him. If you have been looking at prontoedit already thats cool. I started out just learning the commands to the pannels that come with it. then After downloading some CCF's from this site and then tweeking them to fix what I wanted, very easy, but I cant seem to STOP tweeking it.... One of these days it will be the way I want it, but that day is not here yet. Lots of help on the BB and on the PRONTO bb if ya get stuck.

i wold personally try and do it myself. If you decide later you can't, then you coould always ask the dealer to do it. Personally, I found it pretty easy. The tricky part for me was running ProntoEdit on VirtualPC so I could do it on my Mac. And then having to upload and download the configuration from ZTerm. The main thing is designing the screen layouts the way you like it or that is easy to use if there is someone else other than you that will use it. But you can use ProntoEdit to play with the design and use the emulator to try them out without even downloading into the Pronto. Of course my layout is very basic and each device screen is closer to how the original device remote was layed out. I used a very basic bitmap for each button. Definitely a fit as many buttons on a screen type design. You could always just keep evolving it as you become more familiar with it.
The only other thing to programming the remote is to have the Pronto learn the commands from your device remote. This isn't any different than how other learning remotes work. You might want to browse through the screen layouts and CCFs that people have created and posted on this web-site to get some ideas of what can be done. They are very impressive and I am sure you could also get some pointers from people on this site if you get stuck. Mainly comes down to how much time do you want to spend as opposed to someone elses time. To me part of the fun of buying a new "toy" is to get to play with it.
Enjoy.

Do it yourself. It isn't that hard if I can learn how to do it :) Also, the way they customize it for you might not suit your needs. I have spent hours tweaking my pronto ccf to fit my needs perfectly ever since I have got it. No one really knows exactly how you use your remote but you. If you program it you can get exactly what you want and the fortunately for us Pronto owners the Pronto gives us the flexibility to do just about anything we want as well. Good luck!

Thank all of you for your support. It seems unanimous that you all think I should try it myself so I will.
