I'm in the market for a new CD changer and was looking
at one of the 300 disk Sony changers (CX350 or cx555es) that have the two-way LCD remote that displays disk titles on the remote itself. I was wondering if anyone has any experience with this at all, and if the Pronto can be programmed to receive this signal back from the player.
Thanks!

Neil.

No experience on these units, if there isn't a CCF in the files area, I can't help on that. Sorry, but Pronto isn't capable of receiving communications from the device.

It can't receive anything from the player, but it can fully control them otherwise.

I have 2 of the CX350 machines. These have now been replaced (in the UK) by 400 disc machines.
The Pronto does operate the machines quite effectively but can't receive feedback from the player like the 2 way Sony remote. I highly recommend these players (unlike the DVD changer).
However I have one problem that maybe someone can help with? For some reason, the Pronto does not reliably send "3" to the player. Just the 3, everything else works fine. Any ideas why that should be?

I'd try learning the signal again.

I've done that Daniel. I've tried everything. I'm beginning to think it could be a non-IR problem? Something else going on inside the player, rather than the fault of the Pronto.

Could be. Could you try your original remote to see if it works?

How about the AudioReQuest instead of the CD changer? It stores all of your CD's as mp3's on it's HD and has a great GUI for on-screen control. www.request.com if you're interested.

Keiron,
Have you tried using a "3" control for your device taken from the ccf area of the site instead of a learned one?

Good point, Laurie. I'll give that a go. I don't understand this because - in response to Daniel's comment - it always seems to work with the original remote.

Keiron,

Out of interest I see you mention the CX350, do you have the 2 way remote? I was under the impression that the CX350 (which I have as well) comes with the two-way remote and the CX300 is the same machine but with a 'normal' one-way remote.. Could /this/ be something to do with the problems maybe? Something to do with the way the player talks back to the remote means it can read /its/ 3 but the Pronto has trouble?

Ahh, I just had a thought! Are you learning the code in the room with the player? If so, the response from the player could well be confusing the Pronto....

Interested to know how it turns out! I don't think I've noticed problems with any of the codes for this device, most of which were taken from the files section here rather than learnt.

I heard the Pronto had a IR sensor on the front of the unit as well. Although the software doesn't support it, could it be supported by future versions of the OS for this purpose?

It was designed for 2-way communications between the Pronto and Philips receivers (such models never came out). Back in January or so a revision of the circuit board was created that removed the unused IR receiver, so it's now officially useless.

Keiron,

You say in your entry on 16th; "I highly recommend these players (unlike the DVD changer)."

I have been thinking about getting a Sony 200 disc DVD changer. Why can't you recommend it?

I don't think anyone who owns this player is happy. For a start, it has a tendency to switch itself off after you've just switched on. It also won't save changes you make to default settings. It has a ridiculous feature whereby it automatically 'resumes' with the disc you were last playing when you switch on, and the process of getting it to stop and change to another disc can take anything up to a whole minute - and then doesn't always work. The on-screen disc browser sometimes crashes and is difficult to use. It's nigh on impossible to use it as a CD player as you can't directly select a disc - you have to use the on-screen graphics. I could go on...I'm a BIG Sony fan, but I'd give this player a wide berth.
