OK - I can deal with the fact the documentation sucks; luckily there's enough information online on how to actually work the damn thing. But if I can't download a config, what the hell use is it? I mean, for God's sake, it was $350!!!
I've been through the previous posts and I don't see anyone who actually found a solution to the no connection problem. Has anyone actually talked to Philips about the problem? I would be interested in hearing what they have to say.
I don't want to sound sour but I will NEVER purchase another Philips product.

1) What's your operating system? 2) Are the serial ports configured properly? 2) Do they work with other serial devices?

Hi Daniel! Great site!
The operating system is Windows 95. Yes, I beleive they are configured correctly and either one works fine with my digital camera.
I'm gonna try it later on my home computer. It just seems like all the threads on the subject never really come to any conclusion, and I'm curious if anyone's really solved the problem out of anything but chance.

I agree it seems very hard to fix -- even diagnosing what's wrong is practically impossible!
The first thing to do is make sure the ports will actually work with something else. Half the computers out there have never had the serial ports properly configured, either physically, in the BIOS, or in Windows. Often an internal modem will conflict with one, and often a motherboard is so buggy it won't release certain resources or they never work right in the first place.

A lot of people find that upgrading to Windows 98 will fix many problems. If this is an option for you, try it.

I run Win98 on my Dell OptiPlexGs. Believe me, it's no fix. If Philips really supported ProntoEdit wouldn't they distribute it in the box with the remote? Isn't that how every other programmable device is sold?

Hints:
Unplug all other COM devices. It Must be plugged into COM1 or COM2. If you have a chargeer put it in the Charger. Don't trust the battery meter or the batteries that come with it and put fresh batteries like Duracell Ultra's, Voltage does effect communications. Shutdown all uncessary applications, use to get the task list. and applications you know are not needed. Explorer and Systray are generally all that's needed.

Thanks to all. I did get it to work at home. The only difference seems to be that at home it was COM2 and at work it was COM3 or COM4. Not being super computer literate, I'm not sure if that has anything to do with it but hey, like my dad always said, "Never look in a horse's mouth for a gift." Or was it . . . ?

Somehow the pronto keeps thiking its in COM PORT 3. I have only 2 USB ports on my computer so I dont know why its thinking that. I have tried to change the port I am plugging in the keyboard with the Keyspan USB plug (that I have attached to my prontp), but it keeps telling me its in PORT 3 and COM PORT 3 doesnt support 11500 communications.
Im on a MacG4, running Virt PC 3.0 (win 98). It seems to work well except for this pain in the neck message. Any ideas how i can change the assigned COM PORT?

TG: Can't help you, but com ports aren't assigned in logical order. For instance, it's possible for a computer to only have COM4. There should be a setting for that somewhere.
Somewhat related (and to make things a little more confusing), in PC parallel ports there is a LPT0 which, when installed, pushes LPT1 to LPT2, and LPT2 to LPT3. Now figure out the logic there. :-)
