I've tried changing MFC42.DLL in the Windows 98 System file about 3 different ways. One day it works, the next day it won't. I also noticed in the Systems file that the Pronto icon is on this MCF.42DLL file and it's also on 5 files all titled Msvcrt. Also, all of my computer games no longer work with a controller, but the keyboard is OK with them. HELP

This whole buisness of renaming of MFC42.DLL is very dangerous and tells me the philips folks don't know what they are doing. A proper installation should compare the revisions and update the proper DLL's.
My only suggestion at this point would be to upgrade to the latest version of IE5.0 and it will replace and update most of the key systems DLL's and you may get lucky and it will straighten the system out.
I'd backup anything critical before you do anymore experiments. Good Luck.

As far as I know, you're only supposed to rename versions NOT located in c:\windows\system.

George, I think your right about Philips not knowing what they are doing. Not having an adequate manual is proof enough. I did some more work on this problem and I think I got it straighted out, although the icons are still where they don't belong. Since I won't need to open these files I guess I can live with it. I always thought of Philips as being a K-Mart type of a company and I still do, now more than ever. If anyone is thinking of buying this remote just look at all the messages about the re-booting,and all the other problems people are having. I wouldn't think about buying this remote until there is an adequate manual to go with it,and it should come with the product-not a download. I thought the Pronto would save time but it has been just the opposite. I Uninstalled ProntoEdit and the only way I would download again is on a Zip drive. Daniel, don't get me wrong. I think you do a great service to this forum. If you check on Smart Connect the first thing they tell you to do is to go to windows system directory. Then if that doesn't work they tell you to perform a find, which I also did. Thanks all the same.

George I forgot to ask you about IE5.0. What is it and how do I upgrade to it. What about the files titled Msvcrt? Does it take care of these also? Thanks.

Microsoft Internet Explorer 5. Best to keep that up to the latest version (look for a "Product Updates" menu option).

I updated to IE 5.0 (2hrs.43min.). The Mfc42.Dll is still screwed up but 4 of the 5 files titled Msvcrt have gone back to normal. The file remaining has a game icon on it. I opened it and it runs the game from the start. Any other suggestions would be appreciated, thanks for the help so far.
