Given a pc next to the AV system I managed to voice control my pronto this way:
1. Using one of the many freeware windows macro editors
(with the ability to record mouse movements) I made macros for mouse clicks one the pronto emulator for my most frequent operations (mute, vol + -, selecting sources, play, stop etc.
2. I installed the Philips freespeech web browser which is an add on to the Internet Explorer and uses voice recognition to follow links, such as "go to remote central". It can be found at the Philips site.
3. I wrote a simple html page with links to the pronto emulator macros.

So, all I have to say is "lights off, dvd, dvd play" ...

How are you connecting the Pronto to the your computer? How does the voice control work in a theater environment?

thanks

James: The pronto is connected in the usual way. When the pronto is connected, and the pronto emulator is running, the pronto actually sends the ir commands coresponding to the buttons pressed on the emulator.
The voice control works rather well, except when trying to give a command when the volume is too high. I come around this using an rf microphone I keep close to me.

Andy: I was given the freespeech browser from a friend who downloaded it from the philips site - try using their search engine.

I have tried to find this on Philips' site, but I have had no success. Would you consider zipping the FreeSpeech, editer, and html page sample for us?

The freespeech browser can be downloaded at
[Link: speech.philips.com]
It is about 10Mb and you should read the minimum system requirements before downloading.
The html is very simple, just links to the macros on your pc to execute the desired command.

Can this program also be used for the Marantz rc 5000?

As long as the Marantz actually send ir commands for the buttons pressed on the emulator when connected to the pc, like the pronto does.

How did you manage to create the "Href's" for the HTML-page?

I've tried a few Macro Editors but I can't get them to just perform the Macro. All they do is startup and display the available macros in a list... :(

Any help would be very appreciated!

You have to use a macro recorder that allows you to save macros as shortcuts, I use macromagic from
http:\\www.iolo.com

the html just contains links to these shortcuts named 'dvd play' or whatever.

I use Macro Express and it absolutely ROCKS!

Many thanks to George for his excellent idea! My girlfriend really hates you, since I'm spending even less time with her, but you got an A+ in my book.. ;)

To the question:

  • Get yourself the Macro Editor of choice. In M.E. you have the ability to "Export as playable Macro". I'm sure there's something similar in Macro Magic and other programs as well. This option is vital though, it won't work with out it.
  • Create the Macros that you need. This can get how advanced you want. In M.E. you can use variables so I'm able to tell if I already switched to my VCR source If the TV is on and on the proper channel etc. GR8 feature! Basically it will need some thought if you want/need to do more then the basic stuff.
  • Create the HTML page, I'm keeping mine very simple as it wont be seen by the operator. Example;

    <A HREF="\playVCR.mxe">VCR Play</A>

There's nothing more to it. Create a link, like above, for each macro you want to include.
  • Install the proper software. If you're running NT then you will need SP 4 or higher to be able to install Free Speech. You will need Internet Explorer 5.0 or later as well.
  • When you open your webpage in IE and click a link it will ask you if you want to open or save. Click the checkbox, saying something like: "Don't ask this question again" and choose open from location.

You're now all set to voice control your home theater!
