If it's not too old (as in, still warrantied) call philips. I don't think you're going to be able to fix it yourself.

Since, according to you, the hard-button backlight is working: did you check your backlight settings in the setup by pressing and holding the remote icon? Scroll down to the second panel. Change the Level setting of the backlight all the way to the right if you would like the backlight to always come on when you tab the touchscreen and all the way to the left to have no backlight when you tab on the touchscreen.

Interestingly, the instructions say you have to go to the left to keep the back light on. I got caught out and it took me a while to figure it out.
Daniel, if you read this, has this been reported to Phillips?

Yes, I believe this was mentioned a short time ago (the manual is backwards). A bit confusing.

There would appear to be some sort of problem with the European Pronto's backlight.
I have sold about 160 units (all I have got so far), and I have had THREE failed backlights. I actually have a customer who's BL has failed on 2 units (he makes up the 3rd customer)
The light that lights the keys is a DIFFERENT light. Totally independent. Just because the keys light don't expect the backlight to work.
Yes the manual is backwards. You need the bar on the RIGHT to have your backlight always on, and on the left when you only want it on when you press the backlight key.
Philips advise there is no known problem (I reported this to them about 2 weeks ago). Only time will tell whether this is a glitch or an actual problem. Of course these units are under warranty and will be swapped free of charge, only problem is, no one has any stock, so there's none that they can be swapped with !
I'm told stock will be sorted by next month, so it's a matter of turning your room lights on for a while.

Mike,
I believe they were originally refering to the hard backlight button(the one on the left side) turning the backlight on, NOT the hard keys backlight.
That is why it was diagnosed as a light level setup problem in the setup panel.

I don't think so. The hard key backlight is basically the lit up buttons. What he is saying is, they come on, but the REAL back light doesn't. Which is EXACTLY the problem you get when you have a fulty backlight. Also he mentions the light sensor which again indicates that his BL is faulty

Well, I guess we just need to figure whether he said what he ment: "hard button backlight" or "hard backlight button". :-)

Not necessarily Mike,
we still don't know whether as daniel points out , he meant the hard-backlight button or the hard button baclight.
Him mentioning the lightsensor does not mean the backlight is faulty. Since he stated that he thought he POOFED the light sensor, I interpreted that to mean that he could get it to come on via the backlight button but not when touching the screen.
No point in speculating though, guess we will have to wait and see..
Heiko??

I have had the same problem. To clarify, the lights behind the buttons on the right hand side come on but the main backlight does not. I only had the remote for a couple of weeks when this happened but haven't yet returned it as I couldn't bear to be without it!

What about if you use the backlight button on the left side?
Do they come on?

Another data point...my Pronto's screen backlight has just died also. I contacted Philip's customer service and I'll be shipping my Pronto back. Philips claims they will send a replacement unit the day I ship my unit back.
I'd be interested in hearing feedback from others who have sent their units back. How long was it before you received the new unit? How was the experience overall?

My backlight also died last week, so I brought it back to the store where I bought it. They told me it will be gone for 10 workdays.
