Further to the recent "My Pronto burned up in the cradle" thread, my Pronto SBRU940 burned up in the cradle last week. The Pronto still works, however the recharging function is no more. Two of the 4 pins on the back of the Pronto have a slight melting of the surrounding plastic. The Docking station has one of the brass pins blackened and embedded in melted plastic.

Both the shop and Philips down here in New Zealand have been sympathetic and within 24 hours I have been offered a "new" Pronto. I am not sure what model I have been offered; but I have been told it will not be another 940. I have asked the shop to go back to Philips and identify the model number. In the meantime I seek the advice of the many learned contributors to this site. Which is the best option;

1. Take the new model and re-program it. Up side; new remote. Down-side; is the new model actually better than the old, particularly as I will have to reprogram it. At this stage I must confess that even with all your help it took many nights and lots of banter from the family to get the old one going!!

2. Keep the old one and take a refund on the docking station. Upside, no reprograming and I am familar with the old one and how to edit it. Downside; will need to keep a supply of AA batteries in the house and I cannot be sure that when the old Pronto overheated, no latent damage was done that may rear its ugly head?? Further, the females of the house (who never liked the Pronto) have lost any shred of confidence in the beast.

3. Admit defeat, ask for full cash refund and buy big supply of AA and spend rest of life looking for the various remotes to run the Home Ent system.

Appreciate your thoughts as I would like to get back to Philips promptly to strike whilst the Iron (or Pronto) is hot!!!
Thanks,

I imagine you'll be offered a version of the the Pronto 3000 as it's the only black and white model in production. I'd take this deal. Your old ccf can be converted and used although you'll probably what to take advantage of the new features eventually.

Philips has two models out, the 950 (what is known as Pronto next generation) and the 970 (Prontopro), like Jim said, I would guess it is the 950 (pronto NG) that you will get since it replaced the 940. The editor is a bit different and uses PCF files, but it can import CCF files.

This is what the new Pronto looks like

it has 16 shades of grey, much more memory, you can edit the whole screen and it has more hard buttons. So even though it will work with your old CCF, chances are sooner or latter you would want to upgrade the config.

The only thing you will loose (for now) is timers (Philips said they will add them latter)

(you can read a full review by pressing the link on the left hand side called "Philips Pronto NG TSU3000" , that is the American version of the 950)

I doubt they would replay it with a 950... You'd Probably get a Refurb 940.

However if they DO offer a 950, I'd jump on it.

he did say a new Pronto.

PS. since it is a charger and Pronto make sure they will replace both if you get a 950, the charger for the 950 is not the same as that of the 940, and the 950 uses AAA instead of AA so it eats through batteries much faster.

As the 970/6000 has now ceased production, the only model that Philips is currently selling is the 950/3000. So I suspect the only new Pronto they could offer you is a 950/3000. Otherwise it could be a refurbished unit.

Regardless, your current CCF will work with or migrate to any Pronto they give you.

Thanks for the prompt response.

A few phone calls today have established that it is in fact a 950 they are offering, so the information regarding the programing is most welcome. The shop doubted my 940 program would work, however Philips NZ were of view not dissimilar to Anthony and Peter; which is very reassuring. Thanks also for explaining the correlation between the Euro/American model numbers; I was mighty confused a few hours ago.

I look forward to receiving the new one and, over time, taking advantage of all the 950's features.

No doubt I will be back on this forum seeking inspiration. Once again, many thanks for the help.
