My pronto a few years old now, has just started to have black lines on the screen, so many that i can't see the menus. I have tried to reload the firmware on it, but that did not do anything, the black lines like jump around the screen. and idea what the problem might be?

Sounds like your screen is going bad, might be time for a replacement screen. It's also possible that there is a loose connection, which you could check by opening up the remote. There is a very good primer on disassembly/repair (with pictures), here: [Link: joey6p.com].

Jim is right about the loose conection. Try this first before getting a screen replacement.
