One technician recommends me to use PCMCI serial card to obtain RS232 control instead of frequently discussed USB-to-RS232 convertors. It costs for about 5 times more than USB adapter, but he convinced me that it is really better/stable/"native" etc... Who has experience with this type of devices?

If you mean a PCI card that fits the PCI slot of a desktop computer, they can be an excellent choice. I use ByteRunner. You can read a write-up on Adding PC Serial Ports my web page.

I use notebook, and it has no free PCI slots, only PCMCI... I have found PCMCI card with COM port "Argosy PCA-SP-3201" for $100 and think about it - is panacea or not?

I've heard from reliable sources that the RS232 to USB converter from Aten works well with ProntoEdit. [Link: aten-usa.com]Can be had for $29-$35 from a wide variety of places.
