I find naming recordings a pain on these devices. Probably one of the most irritating features.

You have to cycle through the letters, numbers and punctuation. If you don't know the shortcuts, it can take up to 35 button pushes to get to the letter you want. Even if you know what you're doing, will you always select the optimum route to get to the letter you want?

I've taken the shortcuts and built them into a ccf based on the TiVo keyboard ([Link: pinedragon.com]). This way I've reduced the maximum path to 15 keys.

My ccf is here:

This is just the keyboard and should be easy to integrate with existing ccfs. Let me know how you get on. In particular, I'd be interested to hear about timing issues. There are no delays in any of the keys as my set-up doesn't seem to require them, but that may be different with different combinations of remote and DVD recorder.

I have had a play with your ccf ....

I must be doing something wrong because the letter/number I select is not the letter/number that appears on-screen.

Hopefully, a fix or instructions, thanks

Um. That problem's a little bit light on description!

Please try the following:

1. Make a new recording. It will be named something like 'EXT2 14:37'.
2. Use the right arrow button to move into the recording name.
3. Press the 'Init Clr' button on the keypad ccf. This should completely clear out the existing name and leave the cursor at the start of the name box. If it didn't do that, please let me know what it did do and what the name was before it started.
4. Press 'abc' (to switch to lower case letters) then 'a'. Do you get a lower case 'a'? If not, please let me know what you do get.
5. Press 'ABC' then 'A'. Do you get an upper case 'A'? Again, let me know what you get.
6. Please let me know whether the cursor buttons '<' & '>' move the cursor in the box.

In all cases, please make sure to wait for one letter to be transmitted before pressing it again or pressing another.

Let me know how you get on.

Thanks for the help... By the way, do you know of a code/hack to make the 890 RCE compatiable?
Thanks again

To be honest, I don't use the 890 for playback, only recording.

However, I know you can set it either to be "any region", or to be "region-specific". If you use the hack to set it to region 1 directly, rather than the one that allows it to play any region, does it play then?
