What model fireplace is it? Do you know that it can be remote controlled? Didn't it come with a remote control? Also, these are often RF not IR.

You can't just use any IR remote. It has to be a remote compatible with the IR receiver.

I saw a fireplace on one of those tv shows. And the guy said that any ir remote can control it. The thing is, it has to learn the ir code from the remote. Or at least certain ir codes in a row.

This is a good, and a bad thing though. Good thing because any remote can be used. Bad thing, because what if you need that remote for something else. Then it will control both the fireplace and it's device.

What I would do if it just that case. Is grap a remote from a device that is in a different room. Learn one of the codes to the fireplace. Then learn it to the pronto.
