The Celadon piece can be programmed to send discrete serial strings to the RS232 control input triggered by a Sony or NEC IR code.
Effectively what it does is allow an ordinary IR code to trigger a predetermined serial command (say aspect ratio wide, or Power On, or Input 1, etc.).
Discrete IR commands may not be available, but discrete serial commands are. The Celadon piece just acts as a translator.
