This is my first post, but I've been reading this forum for some days. And I read all faq's and everything.

I bought a refurb. ts1000 and received today. After having some problems with the battery pack, I finally got the battery to charge.

I was reading the manual and went to the set up screen. There I found the firmware information. I saw UDB. I remember reading here that only the SU2000 has UDB.

Then I went to Pronto Edit 4.05 that I've been using for a week now and tried to download the ccf that I've been working on the last week. It gave me an error. "Error downloading configuration into RC device." Then I tried uploading the current ccf to my pc. It worked, but I got a message saying this file is a TSU2000 file and asked me if I wanted to convert it to TS1000. I did and I saved the file on my pc. It's a 233kb and the remote says I have 75% memory free. I'm sure 233kb is not 25% of 380kb!

Anyway, I checked the update firmware option and I saw all firmware on my pronto looks like a TSU2000! Then, I updated the firmware using the TSU2000 to SYS4.8 and APPv5.3. And it worked! So now, the set up screen shows firmware SYS4.8, APPv5.3 and UDB USA v1.2.

I tried to download my ccf file as a TSU2000 file, but it didn't work as well.

I also used the "brand" option to set up my cd player as a Sony. It worked and I was able to use my sony cd changer with my pronto. Is this the UDB? I'm not sure.

So my question is: Do I have a TSU2000?? I can tell you it's a black greenish remote. Is there any other way I can check this?

And, why can't I download my ccf file to my remote?

Thanks for this great forum! If it wasn't for all the information available, I wouldn't even be able to use my battery, since the docking station wasn't working untill I removed the battery and put it again, following instruction on this forum.

EDIT: I just downloaded my ccf file (as a TS1000)! I kept the remote awake by pressing the backlight button before the download process. It worked pretty well! The ccf file is 90kb and the remote says I have 90% memory free. So, my question remains: do I have a TS1000 or a TSU2000??

Wow a black greenish tsu-2000
You do have the 2000 due to the fac that you were able to update it with the 2000's firmware. And that you were able to use the udb with your sony cd changer. The 1000 would not even had the opition to change the "brand" of any device.
With your problem of downloading. Well each time you want to download, Push and hold on the back light button when you press "download" on your pc. You may release it when your pc says "downloading ccf into rc device"

Have fun with it.
I have a question for you though. In the upper right hand corner of the remote, is there a small dot in the case of the remote? If so, then could you go to set up menu on page 2 for where the light sensor level is at. And shine light on the remote, cover the dot. Then let it see the light. If there is no dot, then don't worry about it. If there is a dot, please post it on here, and also if the light level senor's bars change.

I don't have the dot on the case. And I can't set up the light sensor level on page 2.

I just can't believe I got a TSU2000! I paid $110 for this reconditioned remote. It has some bad scratches on the IR emitter, but still looks reasonable.

But the two big hard buttons are pretty bad! They are working, but when you press then, they kinda make a mechanical noise and it almost get stuck on pressed position. Before I messed with the remote, I was almost sure I would return it because of this. But, now I know it's a TSU2000, I'm not sure!!

Thanks!

I've seen several Posts saying basically the same thing about Refurbs, lately.

It looks to me like whoever is doing the refurbishing is sorting through whatever works from of a grab-bag of parts, putting them in a decent looking case and movin' 'em out the door as fast as possible, with no regard for what it is they're pushing through the door.

We get to help sort out what's what for those who become confused about what they thought they bought and what they actually got. Regardless of what the sales slip and/or sticker may say.

I think they just want to get rid of as many as possible ASAP before everyone starts buying the 3000.

- Just curious - Are these generally "Factory" Refurbs (if so, who's factory?), and do they come with any kind of warranty?

Being that a TS-1000 case (no paint) likely holds up better than the TSU2000, there's probably more of those in good shape hanging around. Also could be more "unrepairable" TS-1000 remotes at this point, thus plenty of cases hanging around.

If they're really trying to get rid of these ASAP, I'm concerned about quality. I bought many refurbished equipment before, most Sony products direct from a Sony Outlet Store and I never had problems with those. I used to believe that refurbished products go through quality tests and are actually more reliable than brand new ones. I'm hoping this remote won't change my mind!!

It's working, but there are cosmetic damages to it. My previous refurb products looked like brand new ones with a stick saying "refurbished". This one has apparent scratches and it's obvious it's not new. At least the screen looks brand new.

I've been playing with it for a couple of hours and everything seems fine. I had some problems with the battery, but it seems this is common problem with the poor engineered battery bay. The remote rebooted on me twice when I was playing with it, but I believe that was due to very low battery. I let it recharge for a little more time and everything seems fine now.

According to the ebay store I bought from (avoutfitters), this unit has 1 year parts/labor. I'm just wondering if I have a problem I can exchange for a TSU2000 ... :P

There are three types of returned units:

- those that were never broken in the first place such as when people never knew what they were doing. A good example is having comms problems or they trashed the firmware and did not know how to restore it. These units are the best as there was nothing ever wrong with them.

- those that are really broken but repairable such as a broken screen

- those that are broken but no one knows why, usually with an intermittent fault. Philips takes one look at them, decide they are in the first group, and just sends them out again.

I wouldn't want to get one fromn the third group.

I think I've got the same situation as you Waters_10. Just received my refurbed (by Philips) TS1000 from AVOutfitters for $105. Great shape and dark green. Started playing with it and when I try different devices it asks if I want to use the Philips code or choose another manufacturer. So I'm thinking "Hey, I thought everyone here said that the TS1000 needed to learn any new devices other than Philips". What's up with this? So I go through and choose all of the different brands to control my system. How do I get Revert turned on again?

So then I decide to check the Setup screen and it says SYS 4.6 and APP 5.1 with a date of 9/20/2000 and there was UDB there also. I then looked in ProntoEdit 4.05 for the firmware upgrade and the TS1000 is SYS 3.62 and APP 4.85. So now I'm beginning to believe I've got a 2000 in a 1000 shell. Could it be this great?

But wait, it gets better. I start messing around with downloading all of these great ccf's and now the UDB is gone! So I then go back to Setup screen #2 to try the Revert, but it's ghosted and doesn't respond. Pronto experts: what should I do now. Should I firmware upgrade it to the current 2000 level of 4.8 and 5.3?

You can update the firmware. But it won't fix your problem like that. Your problem has nothing to do with the firmware at this point.
Your problem is........

When you download a ccf from this site. You have to realize that some, not all, don't use the data base. They use learned codes. There for there is no "pointer" to tell what device you are under. So the remote does not know if your in tv. Because the codes with in tv are learned. Their not selected from the data base.

In order to have the opition to select a brand on your remote. You need to go into each button, and select what kind of device it is, select the brand that you have. And check each of the codes.
Then in the future when or if, you change that device all you have to do is change the devices brand.

But realize this, it's much easier to learn the codes. Or at least the codes that are not in the data base.

Also with your revert button. Well it will allways be grayed out, UNLESS. You make a change on the remote itself. Each time you download a ccf, the revert button will be grayed. Because it has no reason to have that opition. Unless, like I said, make a change on the remote. Which are any one of these. Label, learning a code, editing a macro, deleting, adding, and whatever else that I missed.

I got mine from avoutfitters as well.

I'm not 100% satisfied with it though.

It still reboots once in a while. Something like once in a couple of days. I'm not sure if this is battery related, since I got the docking station refurbished as well.

These random reboots are quite annoying, since I couldn't find any pattern
and they really seem random. It happened when I selected cd's on my
supernudelist, when I changed channels on my tv, when I go to home panel.
I never succesfully reproduced them. Any ideas?

One more thing that bugs me is when I access the battery meter. After 3
days I recharged the battery to full, the battery meter keeps changing
from full to 3 bars less every couple of seconds! It doesn't lock to a certain reading, it just keeps changing. This seems strange to me. Any ideas?

At this moment, I decided to keep it since I paid quite cheap for a 2000 model. But, I could be more satisfied with it. Hope yours works better than mine!

Thanks Rob, I was able to make a change on the remote, then the Revert button was available. I did the Revert function and now I've got my UDB back! It says UDB USA V1.2 8/21/2000. With no codes loaded from the UDB it also says that memory is at 75%. Is that how much free memory (946k)is available on a virgin 2000? So I still must ask, do I really have a TS2000 in a TS1000 body? If indeed so, than is it safe to upgrade the firmware to the latest in PE 4.05? I understand about not really needing the UDB as that's why I only bought a 1000 in the first place, but if AVOutfitters is shipping out gray colored TS2000's for $100, then I think we all have a great opportunity here.

The thing with the battery level thing is..... The battery pack puts out 4.7 volts. But with regular AA's they put out 6 volts. And the meter is made to show how much charge the AA's have, not the pack. But there is a fix-it......

Make sure your remote is fully charged by having it on the dock, and then let the green light go out.
Go to the set up menu, second screen. Where the light senor meter is at. Tap on the "Level" bring the bar all the way down to the left, using the left hard button. Take out the battery pack and then put it back in. Allow the remote to reboot. Wait until the screen goes blank. Then go to the set up menu, first page where the battery meter is at. It should now read fully charged. Go to the second page. The bar should be at where it was at before you started this whole thing. If not, adjust it to where it was.

Net Doctor,
It is safe to update the firmware. Even if you did have a ts-1000, ProntoEdit would not allow you to update a tsu-2000's firmware into a ts-1000 remote. So your safe anyways.
