Hello folks,

I want to share with you an idea on how to help resolve the tactile less feeling of the Pronto screen. Here it goes:

- Use Pronto emulator to capture a bitmap snapshot of your selected device screen.
- Convert that snapshot into a button image (full screen).
- Use the properties to make that button do a loud beep.
- Within your device panel, add this button and move it to the background.
- Put on top of this button image the buttons of your related device (positioning your buttons at the exact same location on the overall snapshot).

The final result will be that once you try to push slightly offset one of the device's button, your Pronto will do a loud beep meaning that you are not pressing the button in its exact location.

Hope it helps!

P.S. Any feedback from Daniel, Anthony, Mr Randall (always been my favourite), John, Peter, Jim, Dale, Rob (newest active member "King of Typos"), Stewart, Andrea, edmund (the hard button guy) and bOObie will be greatly appreciated.

P.P.S. Sorry if I forgot any of the main contributors of remotecentral.com. But please give me your feedback as well!

Martin,
I would like to thank you for mentioning me in your thread as a contributor of this web site.

Although I might not understand your idea. I hope it works out well.

Why not just make the background a buton?

Martin,

Thats pretty ingenious! I'd love to try it out, but my Marantz won't do custom beeps. With a Pronto, however, one of those nasty loud buzzes would tell you "you done screwed up". If you have a lot of panels, memory could be a problem. Full screen bitmaps can use it up in a hurry.

I must defer to the Man-'o-the-Hills . . .

He's got more ideas on tactile feedback than . . . well......than I can shake a stick at!

Peter,

You got it. The background will be a button.

Does Peter win a prize?

And I think Rob-who-secretly-wants-to-be-Emily-Post, deserves a White Doiley for politeness!

What the hell are you talking about Mike? Who is Emily Post? I am not polite all the damn time. And you should damn well know that too. There are times that I am not happy. Like with Jay the other night. WTF was that crap all about????

Rob,

In the last 2 years and something, I've only gotten P.O.ed (and into it) twice with someone. Guess who both times. I think he just likes to flame bait you. Don't sweat it - he's just looking to get a rise. When he used to hang out on this forum - he helped a lot of people and is quite knowledgeable. Mike's got his thing and Jay's got another.

Well ignoring all that crap in the middle of this thread...

I thought that buttons already make a "beep" when you press them. If you don't get a beep, you didn't press it.

Well Jeff, returning to the original issue (ignoring the crap), the subject was giving the user some "feedback". You are correct, but no beep isn't exactly feedback. Right now, you don't know if you missed or just didn't press hard enough. A minor point to be sure, but still valid.

Jeff,
What I think he wants to do. Is to make a panel with the back ground being a button that has a different sounding beep. So that the user can tell if they hit a button or the back ground. Only the Pronto has the opition on different sounding beeps. Not only different sounding, but different volume as well.

Honestly, while this idea does tell you when you miss the button, it does so by negative reinforcement. And since the issue is a dexterity issue, I honestly don't think the reinforcement would help you to learn the dexterity required to always hit the right button.

The remote already provides positive reinforcement when you hit a button correctly--your home theater reacts as you intended. But this reinforcement doesn't teach your fingers to be as precise as most of us would like. I doubt negative reinforcement would fare any better.

One thing I've done for some clients is to structure the CCF such that important buttons were near the edge of the screen. Our fingers are fairly good at judging the distance they've moved on a surface, so this helps a lot in "blind surfing."

I also know of some folks who have used those thin plastic screen protectors with the Pronto. If you took one of these, placed it upside down on cardboard, and then used the tip of your stylus to press small indentations into it, you could produce "nubs" that would stick up and serve as tactile feedback on where your fingertip is.

But for me, if my remote sounded off an annoying beep or buzz every time I missed a button, I think it would find itself implanted in the sheet rock of the living room wall. Your mileage may vary.
