There have been issues with X10 in the past due mainly to noise on the powerline. There are also other manufacturers that use the x10 Protocol, and in my opinion have perfected noise control better than X10 the company.
All of this is relevant, because X10 the company is the cheapest. In my experience, Leviton's DHC (x10 Protocol) has the nicest powerline control product utilizing the x10 protocol. Leviton DHC on average cost 2-3 times more than X10, but the extra cost is worth the nice features of Leviton Dimmers, Longevity and Reliability.
As with any powerline carrier installation, noise control and amplification may be needed depending on the size of the system. One room applications rarely experience problems (same phase not requiring a coupler).
