I am looking for a new remote to control my home theater. I was looking at the Sony AV300, but I don't like the limited selections of buttons. I really like like the Pronto because of this reason. I also like the better macro function of the Pronto.

My wife has given me the okay to buy one. I am just not sure about where. I live in Canada and the cheapest I have found a TSU2000 for is $469.99 plus tax. The DS100 is $119.99. I can get the remote and charger at Ecost and have it shipped to Canada for the same price as the remote itself if I bought it in Canada.

I am just sort of worried about getting it DOA and having to return it to Ecost. Are the Pronto's reliiable? If I get it shipped from Ecost, should I have any problems with it being defective out of the box?

Also, how long do AA batteries last in the Pronto? I figure we would use the remote around 4 hours a day or so. I have read all the problems with the rechargable battery and am not sure fi I want to get it. Should I get it?

Thanks,

Chris

I have ordered many Pronto's shipped from the US (in the 20s) to Canada (not from Ecost) and none of them were DOA, actually except for one broken screen (happened latter) all are still working fine. And some have traveled back to the US and across country. I also had some going back and forth to Europe (until one got lost)

That will really depend on how you use it (backlight, LCD time out, how often you download a new config, how often do you change channel....)

I have the charger at home and at work, and I love it. It is nice to know that you don't have to worry about batteries. No matter how long they last, there is always a time you need to change them, and it always seems to happen at the worst moment.

P.S. Don't forget that the nature of a forum is that you will hear about the problem cases. No one will post to say I have a charger and it works fine.

Will the Pronto work with NIMH AA batteries? I have a few sets of them at home for use with my digital camera.

yes, but you will obviously have to charge them the normal way. And like the pack, the meter on the program will not be right

I think I will go with the DS100, so I never have to worry about having to hange the batteries. And if it is anything like all the other remotes I have changed batteries on, the door will become loose and fall off all the time. I would prefer not having to open it.

There price is more than Ecost, unless I go with q refurbished TSU2000 and DS1000. I am not sure I want to buy a refurb. Also, I don't think they will ship to Canada.
