I've been working on this new CCF and was wondering if I might be pushing the envelope a little too far. So far I've got about 550 panels and estimate there will be between 900-1000 before I'm done. Why so many? I've built-in a numeric keypad (for CD disk, DVD disk, and TV channel #'s) with a 3-digit display that goes up to the max valid number for each device. The display shows the part of the number entered so far, and the "enter" key transmits all the necessary IR to select the disk or channel you want. Every time you press a number on the keypad, you go to a different panel. So a 300-disk changer gets 300 panels almost all identical to keep track of the state. To do all this, I'm generating a CSF file from a Perl script and using the CCF compiler to create the CCF. So far the CCF size is just over 2.5M (for a 9200).

This got me curious about the largest CCF's people have successfully created, by # of panels, # of buttons, # devices, etc. From what I understand, the theoretical limit on all this is a function of available memory, but there may be practical limits imposed by the firmware or TSS/PE.

Anyone care to share how they've pushed the limits of the remote?

I'm working on a new CCF that also uses many panels, although nothing in the league of what you're doing. In my CCF, I have many "nearly duplicate" panels, and because I wanted each panel to have control over the hard buttons, about half of these panels are in their own devices. I estimate that the final CCF will have something like 300 panels, including panels in the Macros section. My file is under 1500K for the ProntoPro.

I know that some folks will avoid a CCF that is not easily editable by hand. Still, if the file is for your own use, or if you can provide an easy utility for people who want to customize your CCF, I think the sky is the limit.

I could have implemented the design I'm currently working on in less than a month if I had simply designed it for my own use. Making the file easily editable for others turned the project into a multi-month job. In my case, I'm not planning on offering a utility because the design of the CCF itself should make customization fairly easy. It's possible your own design may be easily transferable too, if you make good use of aliases.

Of course, you always have to be on the lookout for memory usage and device limitations. I've heard that the Pronto supports only 256 devices, though I've never actually put that to the test.

Thanks,
Dale

- There was a guy that created a panel that was so complicated that his Pronto could not display it. (CPU limit- works on PC)
not the thread I was looking for but: [Link: remotecentral.com]

- And I think someone else reached the max in macro lengths (caused by stack overflow).

Neil,

I appreciate your interest in what I've done so far, but the project is at such an early stage and in so many bits and pieces right now that I'm not really comfortable enough with it to pass it on to anyone just yet.

Regards,
mike
