I would uninstall all of them again, delete the directory's,folders, original zip downloads etc. Just save your CCF's somewhere. Then I would run a virus scan just to be safe. I would redownload the files again just to rule out any corruption. If that does not work there must be some kind of corruption somewhere possibly the registry. I would then run a Norton type registry fixer tool. Winbloze I think might have one built in as well. If still won't fire up I will split the valium with you. :)

The emulator does use a file called pronto.css which is in the root directory of the drive where the emulator is installed, i.e. usually in c:\pronto.css. Maybe file this is corrupted.

Found the answer.

I rebooted after first deleting everything from my startup menu. Emulator worked as it should.

As I returned programs one by one to the startup, it turned out the problem was Zone Alarm Pro. When I removed that PE and a couple of other minor nagging problems went away.

Word to the wise. Thanks all for your suggestions.

I am glad you found it but I was unable to duplicate it. ZA is running fine here. Do you have the latest version?

I have not contacted them--yet. Just discovered it late last night.

The problem is not how it runs--it runs fine. It just interferes with PE, among others. Easy CD Creator also would not run, unless it was first loaded at startup. Also, on shutdown, I got a "program not responding" box, and had to manually shut it off before my computer would begin shutdown.

On another forum I go to, there had been posts about ZAP acting up, but I didn't pay alot of attention because, like Echoslob[??], I thought that mine was OK.

As to evaluation, it's kinda one of those programs where I like it, but don't really miss it if its gone. It always blocks access to the internet and asks you first if you want to allow a certain program to do so, which is good. It also blocks pop-up ads, which is VERY good. But I DO also have an anti-virus running, so that's an important function I'm not losing by shutting it off.

Joel,

If you can't get the problem resolved with ZA tech support, you might want to try the old version. ZA ver 2.6 is a free download and has always "played nice" with all my versions of PE and TSS.

Thanks, guys, for helping out with this problem. I just installed PEdit 4, and selecting the Emulator froze up the program, just as described. Turned out Zone Alarm was the problem on my system, too. (And I installed it in the root of C:\, just in case.)

But I think it is worth pointing out that I have other programs that either don't start up once installed, or won't install... they seem to vanish in the haze, until I shut down, and then I get a message "End XX?"... which indicates it was running all along, just hiding on me. I have done a complete Windows XP "repair", but I think that overall the problems with the Emulator are probably MS-based, and not Zone Alarm-based... it just happens that the mix is bad. I'll bet that if I install the same PEdit on my Toshiba laptop, which is a fairly clean XP setup, I won't have the same problem... ... Mike

Is ZoneAlarm one of those programs that monitors *other* programs running?

Daniel,

Not that I'm aware of. It's a software firewall. Doesn't appear to interact with other programs UNLESS they attempt to access the net. If they do, then they're stopped, unless you've set zone alarm up to allow them to communicate.

Since it does run in the background - there is always some chance for interaction. I've had no problems however.

ZAP 3.0 (the XP version) has been reported to cause LOTS of problems. I had several (programs not working, not installing) that had nothing to do with accessing the internet but still only cleared up when I disabled ZAP.

THEN I had a legal research internet site that simply wouldn't search until I totally removed ZAP, even though it wasn't running. Version 2.65 is not supposed to have those problems.

I had exactly the same problem with the emulator. I found the solution on another thread posted by bmcguirk which resolved the issue for me.

"Turned out I had to set the TEMP variable on my computer to C:\TEMP instead of C:\Documents and Settings\yada\yada\yada\. Emulator works like a charm now. -Bill

In Windows 2000, First create a directory on your C: drive called "TEMP". Then, right click on "My Computer", choose properties, then the "Advanced" tab, then the "Environment Variables", then you should already see a Variable listed in the top half of the screen called TEMP that points to some directory. Modify the directory that TEMP points to so that it is C:\TEMP. Reboot the computer and run your emulator again. The emulator should run fine now."
