HEY DAN,

I for one appreciate you, this site and everyone who helps out here but I have to be honest. The forum software leaves much to be desired. I was going to say it sux but I thought better of it and decided not too :) I would gladly pay a fee and I am sure a lot of others would if you would consider V bulletin forum software. It is so much better in every way and would only make a great forum better. Please don't take this as a negative but rather a way to improve on an already great forum. If you need any kind of assistance I am an admin at a few places and I could get our software guys to give you any kind of help you need. I can't stress enough how much better it would be. Thanks again for a great forum.

Believe it or not, this is not a forum issue... at least nothing that wouldn't happen to any other forum software. The issue is a program is crashing and creating a huge file that's sucking up my disk quota space. For example, the system thinks I'm using, say, 1050MB out of a limit of 1000MB. Thus, anything that currently exists and is re-writen (forum index, user file, etc) is instead deleted. If the forum had all the disk space it needed, this wouldn't be an issue (I've been bugging the sysadmin for a few weeks now about this).

Now, the program that's crashing IS part of the forum -- the thread keyword highlight code. I have not been able to figure out what exactly. A week and a half ago I located and fixed what I thought to be the problem, but I guess there's something else. :-P

OK, located another way the program COULD have crashed and fixed it. Also located a small code bug that could have allowed the first problem to reoccur.

You know, the ironic part is that the actual code that adds users, creates messages, updates stats etc, has proven 100% reliable since my last change a month or so ago. It's the LEAST important part of the forum that's managing to take down the rest!

Dan,

Please pardon me if I am budding in where I don't belong, however...

I'm sorry to hear about the problems you are experiencing. However I wonder if the suggestion isn't being made to offer a solution that not only provides for a more robust system that gives you less headachesmight but possibly adds features to the forum. Like e-mail notification of responses to posts, etc.

My 2 cents.

Thanks from a member since 3/99

Those programs put quite heavy loads on a system, which I don't think will work well on the current hardware.

Yes Dan as Claude stated I was thinking along those lines as well not so much the crashing issue. Email notification plus easier thread views. Maybe you could look into a hardware software change to make the forum as good as I know it can be an figure out the cost. I bet among the membership it might come out to a few dollars per member. I would be happy to contribute more then my share. Just think about it :)

If you're talking about changing to one of those "Branching Tree" type Forums. Uh-Uh..........count me OUT!

Those are way too difficult to navigate, and I for one, don't need email notification. And please don't ever lose the 'Active Bump-to-the-top'.

Nope VB is not a branching tree type. I have seen those and I don't like them either.

Subscribing to threads is on my to-do list, but not for a while. Something I could do fairly easily is "active messages for the last 24 hours", even perhaps "active messages since your last visit".

I currently have no plans to change to a commercial/freeware system. Absolutely everything on this site is completely original and I plan on keeping it that way.

Quite frankly, I like the originality of this site. I've seen too many of the same old forum sites.

I like the layout, etc. and I know that Daniel will continue to add features that are most requested by users.

Just my 2 cents! :-)

... Greg

Now, if we could just figure out this problem with returning to previous pages, etc. etc. as mentioned in another post, we'd be in great shape!

The design and layout of this site is great. The email notification of responses might be a neat option, however some of those can be real annoying.
I am also having trouble loading pages and must sometime click again to get a quick loading.

I think there is no such thing as a perfect site. What I mean is that what one considers a feature others consider a problem. I remember reading a post here where someone was annoyed that the screen on the Pronto did not light up when he pressed the hard buttons, on the same page someone was complaining that the Marantz did. I visit a site that does use VB, what annoys me the most from that site (I don't know if it is a VB thing or the way it is implemented) is that it has one cookie for all forums, so when I start reading I am forced to read through all forums fast, or I loose the "new" mark (it also has a very short newness refresh that does not help).

I don't care Daniel! Just fix it for those of us who do, dang it!!!! ;-)

Maybe when your ISP upgrades, the problem will vanish! Here's hoping so!
