While i love my pronto, in a bright room it is pretty hard to see no matter how well you calibrate the contrast settings. Is there any way known of improving the LCD display?

Other than by tweaking the contrast knob, no.
You could put one of those little clip-on reading lights on it. [Why that's so crazy, it just might work!]
