My TS-1000, which has serve me and my family well over the past 2-1/2 years, appears to have died. I have tried the battery removal trick, to no avail. Since sending it off to be repaired does not seem to be economically practical, I will likely open it up this evening to see what I can see. I very much doubt I will be able to repair anything, but it may satisfy my curiosity.

The death of the TS-1000 has me exploring alternatives, which always raises questions.

1 - If I were to buy a Marantz remote, is my CCF transferrable? Like many of you, I have a fair amount of time invested in my CCF and I would rather not have to reinvent the wheel if possible. However, I am attracted to the page jump feature of the Marantz remote.

2 - Is the Marantz three year warranty transferrable? Is the Philips warranty still only one year?

3 - What type of price declines (if any) do you expect to see in the coming months for the new models (ProntoPro, Marantz 5200, Marantz 9200)?

4 - When I checked the Philips website last night, they showed a picture of a remote with four buttons along the bottom which was captioned TSU-2000. Was this simply a mistake (a mirage, wishful thinking) or are they updating the TSU-2000 configuration?

Thanks

Jphn,

#1 You can use your ccf in the Marantz versions, you will have extra space at the top bottom though.

#2 Marantz warrantee card says only good for original purchaser. Philips is still one year.

#3 I doubt you'll see much, and I bet none. But that's just my humble opinion.

#4 That pictures been around a long time and the consensus is that they posted the wrong pic.

John, did you try downloading a fresh copy of the firmware?

For some reason (maybe the cold weather) a lot of Prontos have died in recent weeks.

Peter, I have tried removing the batteries and downloading the firmware again, to no avail. The Pronto remains largely intert and will not communicate with the computer.

Bomberjim, thank you for your response. The info will prove useful as I try to figure out what to do.

Do you think more reliability has been shown by the newer iterations of the Pronto? While I am addicted to the benefits and customization of the Pronto, I would rather not have to replace it every two years.

Thanks,

John

John,

I have an older Pronto, TSU1000, and one of the newer Marantz models. The original, although now relegated to the upstairs, is still working fine. It has over the last 2+ years developed a squeak in one of the lower hard buttons where it's apparently rubbing on the case. On a percentage basis, there aren't that many Prontos older than yours or mine, hard to say about long term reliability of any of the newer models. Yours might have been "luck of the draw".

Nov 99 I got my first Pronto, and it is still going well, and it is used in a work environment (i.e. knocked around by people, coffee....) since that first Pronto worked well a few months latter we started introducing it to the rest of our locations, so over the years we have added many Prontos 20-30. And we have not had any problems.

John,

A week or so ago, I posted nearly the exact same post as you have - suddenly a dead Pronto 1000. I have not been able to do anything that can breathe life into it. It just behaves as though there were no batteries at all.

I will continue to watch as you receive responses - maybe someone will have a unique idea!

My sympathies - Dave
