It's nice to see Microsoft sticking its nose into the learning remote area. That should start to bring the price of these remotes down a bit. Don't get me wrong, I love my RC9200 to death, but they are waaaaay overpriced for what they are.
The JBL TC1000JBL and its other buddies (Microsoft & HK have licensed in various formats to others as well as JBL) looks like a decent product.
Naturally, it doesn't have the flexibility of the pronto. But it is easier to setup due to the use of wizards (almost as easy as Harmony). And with the included PC program the abilty to add/edit text buttons & actions (macros) easily makes it more configurable than the Harmony for about the same price.
It won't replace the Pronto, but Philips should be hearing the footsteps.
But being that Microsoft is involved, I hope the unit has a really big reset button.

It's a neat remote, if you've never seen a Pronto. The touchscreen buttons are programmable, but the layout is not. Here's a link:

The Pronto/Marantz will learn RC5 for operating wife to get beer from fridge.

The JBL works only on my dog--and then he wets the floor.

Wait, is this a follow-on to the HK "Take Control" remotes with Microsoft CE as the base OS? If it is good luck. I though it was a neat idea until I tried to program it. Not very flexable and not even close to the functional abilities of a Pronto.

Are we all talking about the same thing here?

A) There was a Microsoft/JBL/Harman Kardon/Madrigal remote that came out in 1998 at the same time as the Pronto. It's already reviewed here, and has been discontinued. Despite the rumors, this remote did not have any bit of Windows CE in it. These are being sold off at bargain prices.

B) The $99 RCA RCU1000B (which is "recent" but not really "new" any more) is NOT in the same catagory and is better compared to a Crisp UC-515 or a Sony RM-AV2100.

Maybe my mistake... I do know that Microsoft was involved with the HK remotes design.... I would just not consider it in the same league as the Pronto remotes (and based on the price point I would not expect it to!).

This remote doesn't look anything like the H/K TC1000.

I originally learned about learning touchscreen remotes by looking at Microsoft's site. I used the TC1000 for about a year before giving up & buying a pronto. I was able to sell of the TC1000 and I couldn't be happier. This looks like it's a bit better than the H/K remote, but still not even in the same league as pronto.

Well, the T/C could have been in the Pronto's league with the same hardware... so what EXACTLY are we all talking about? :-)

So does anyone know what remote it was? was it an RCA clone, TC1000 clone or some new remote. I tried looking at JBL's web site but I could not find any.

is getting reviews that are better than the pronto

I find that funny. Reviewed? who? none of us has heard about it. OK we might not know everything, but if it such a great remote someone on this site would have heard of it. It is not even advertised on J&R's web site.

Does it come with cloaking technology?
