Since the Marantz and Philips remotes are nearly identical, has anyone copied the database file from the philips over the crappy one with the Marantz?

It should work.

If anyone has the largest version (ProntoPro I think?) I'm willing to give it a shot...

Won't work. They "look" alike, but are different animals inside.

The Philips has an inbuilt IR Database; the Marantz does not.

The database is part of the firmware. The only way to do what you want is to have a Pronto and a Marantz and have the Marantz learn from the Pronto (very time consuming to teach all the commands)
