Just wondering what everyone thinks about both the Pronto Pro and the Marantz 9200 remotes? Which one is better and what are the differences in each?

If anyone owns either model, please let me know what you like or don't like about it. I'm thinking about getting one or the other.

Regards,

Jeff

Jeff, the major differences between the two are:

(9200)

1. More hard buttons, including a cursor pad for navigating through menu's and guides quickly.

2. More editable screen space, allowing more/bigger icons and buttons.

3. 3 year warranty vs 1 year for the Pro (US)

4. Comes with the RX-77 RF adaptor, to allow control of equipment behind closed doors or in another room. (The pro will also do RF, but the RF adaptor is an option, and is purchased separately)

5. The ability to do multiple jumps in a macro for crude animation or instruction screens while a macro is carried out.

(Pro)

1. Cheaper than the 9200

2. Ability to do timers

3. Ability to do custom beeps

4. Availabilty is usually better on the Pro

5. Has a clock, 9200 does NOT (YET) edited

6. Has built-in remote IR database edited

That's about all I can think of at the moment. I'm sure others will add if there is more.

As Peter pointed out, the pro has the IR database. The other side of that, is the RC9200 has 12% more free memory, because it doesn't :-)

Any in any case, do most people actually use the database (and if so, do they use more that 1% of it). I would be better IMHO if the database was on the PC not in the remote. But then of course, you'd then have to use a PC to setup your pronto. IMHO, you should be anyway. You don't spend $1000 on a remote and then just learn IR codes. You want full control and for that you need a PC.

AJM, that is one of the reasons. The other reason is that Philips has bought the DB, so there are copyright issues (anyone can use the DB if it is in PE, like other CCF remotes like Marantz and other remotes that can translate Pronto HEX like the T2)

Also if you use the DB for your code the HEX string is shorter then a learnt code, so the same CCF with learnt codes instead of the UDB codes will be slightly larger.

Can anyone confirm the Marantz has more screen space? I am looking at both pc setup programs on my computer and .ccf files on both. They look exactly the same to me in regard to screen space.

Also, do you like the hard buttons on the Marantz 9200 better than the pro? The pro is kind of nice because of the 4 button row layout, but the 9200 has the cursor pad. Also, can anyone tell me about what the other buttons do around the cursor hard buttons? One looks like a home button but the others don't say on their web site to figure out.

Regards,

Jeff

Jeff, as far as I know, the screens themselves are roughly the same size. It's the amount of screen space that you can edit.

Because there is no home icon on the screen on the 9200, that space can now be accessed and used for something else.

The size of the screen is the same, but less of the screen is used for system functions (Home, device macro) so your panel is a bit bigger, about 50 pixels bigger

One of the other button is the Home button that was taken off the screen. The other buttons are up to you.
The two at the top have their name displayed on screen.

Another difference is the Pro has the clock display and the 9200 doesn't. :-(

Wow!.. John, Anthony, Peter, Andrea...etc

I am compelled to congratulate you all. The above is one of the most neutral, fair, well balanced, accurate (John, no one's perfect) responses on this issue that I have seen here to date.

Now, if Greg would only finally publish the BDT Award list, I think my day would be complete!

Can someone tell me if the hard keys, such as the cursor pad and home button are back light so they light up in the dark? Also, what would you choose if you had to buy a new one again?

Thanks, still trying to decide. I like the clock on the Pronto Pro and that's one of my sticking points with the 9200 model.

Jeff

Jeff,

The 5 hard keys on the right side light up when the backlight button is pressed, the others (cursor pad etc) do not. I would certainly purchase the 9200 again. The additional features of Marantz are worth it to me.

I'm a tad surprised they didn't light ALL buttons, but I have to agree that the extra keys make it a very nice remote.

Daniel, amazing! That's tantamount to a review and in only one sentence!
