Man, I'm having nothing but difficulty with my remote and Pronto edit software. I'm wondering if any of you can help me with this.

On my old laptop running XP, pronto edit would crash almost every time I taught my remote a code. It got to the point where it would just lock up and never do anything.

Since it's an old pc with nothing on it, I wiped the hard drive and reinstalled windows ME. The only program I have installed since reformatting the hard drive and putting ME back on it was pronto edit 2.0. now when I plug in the cord and try to upload from the remote to the PC, it tells me that it can't connect and com 1 is in use.

I'm so frustrated and I don't know what to do. I reboot the machine and it is still in use, or so it says. How can that be? Can anyone help me figure out how to get my pc and remote to talk to each other?

Thanks,

John

John...

It "sounds" like a registry setting is there that is telling the OS that Com_1 is in use. Delete Com_1, reboot, and let it re-install as a first shot.

And don't try to learn codes while hooked up to PE. This is a known problem. Teach em on the remote, then upload from the remote to PE.

I too have learned lots of commands while the remote is plugged into the PE software without problems. However, this is the first time that it has started failing.

Bruce, can you give me an explaniation on how to delete the Com 1 from the registry? I'm no expert with doing things like that and I have absolutely no idea how to attempt that.

Thanks everyone for your help.

John: no one said that there will necessarily be problems. And I have used my PC to learn. But a lot of people have had problems, and even if there is no problems (like PC locking up) the learnt codes tend to be dirtier and have a greater chance of not working. Also it takes longer to learn a code using the PC then the remote by itself. When you press learn on the PC (as far as we can tell) it sends a code to the remote to get it ready to pass the codes to the PC, then the PC receives the on/offs and does the calculations. Since PCs tend to multitask there is a greater chance that it is doing something else and the result will be a few fraction of a second off. On NT machines (such as XP) that is amplified, since the machine has more processes running to make sure that the PC does not crash.

John...

Deleting the Com1 from the registry should, but probably won't be, a matter of click on start, settings, control panel, double click system, clcik on Device Manager tab, click on Ports, click on the + at Com & LPT, highlight Communications Port (COM1), click on remove on the button below.

What will happen, however, is that when you reboot, the system will see COM1 and want to put it back.

That is why the approach recommended in the other thread you posted that I cannot find right now, was to (also) disable the modem in the bios first. Then delete the port and then reboot since the system should re-install the port with the correct registry settings sans the modem.
