John...Deleting the Com1 from the registry should, but probably won't be, a matter of click on start, settings, control panel, double click system, clcik on Device Manager tab, click on Ports, click on the + at Com & LPT, highlight Communications Port (COM1), click on remove on the button below.
What will happen, however, is that when you reboot, the system will see COM1 and want to put it back.
That is why the approach recommended in the other thread you posted that I cannot find right now, was to (also) disable the modem in the bios first. Then delete the port and then reboot since the system should re-install the port with the correct registry settings sans the modem.
