Yesterday I downloaded pronto edit and everything was fine until I needed to download into pronto. I kept getting pronto not connected with no details,so I did a search on this forum and found some possible solutions but none of them would work. Going thru my computer literature I found this:

1. CLICK START ON THE DESKTOP AND CLICK CONTROL PANEL.

2. CLICK PERFORMANCE AND MAINTENANCE.

3. CLICK THE SYSTEM ICON.

4. SELECT THE HARDWARE TAB AND THEN CLICK DEVICE MANAGER BUTTON.

5. CLICK PLUS SYMBOL NEXT TO THE PORTS (COM AND LPT) DEVICE.

6.RIGHT-CLICK THE COMMUNICATIONS PORT, FOR EXAMPLE, COMMUNICATION PORT (COM 1), AND THEN CLICK UNINSTALL.

7. WHEN THE CONFIRM DEVICE REMOVAL SCREEN APPEARS, CLICK OK. IF YOU HAVE TWO PORTS, REPEAT STEPS 6 AND 7.

8.CLICK THE ACTION MENU AND THEN CLICK SCAN FOR HARDWARE CHANGES.

YOUR PC FINDS THESE PORTS AND MAY LABEL THEM WITH DIFFERENT NUMBERS. THE PORTS CAN NOW BE USED.

I hope this may help someone and save that person time.
Also I am running windows XP

Does anyone know what speed the pronto likes? I am using a USB adapter and I get the same error often. I wonder if the port is to fast, which causes errors like the Pronto is not connected. Also sometimes I get a error during download, right at the end of a download. The Pronto seems to work fine, even in these cases and DOES perform its reset even if the message is that there was an error in the update.

Prontoedit actually sets the speed to 115200. You have no choice in the matter.

I am having the same problem now. I have tried Enable/Disable the COM PORT, multi times and rebooting the computer. To no avail. I am using a Toshiba ThinkPad lap Top with Windows 98. My wife had previously had her Palm Pilot connected to the same port. May this be some sort of problem?

Patience is wearing thin. If all else fails my brother is coming by later, he is a technogeek with Sprint. No offense!;)
Thanks,

You have to make sure the Palm software is disabled.

Also make sure there are no empty COM ports. Pronto Edit installs on the last available port, and if there is an unused one between the first and the last, it will not search beyond the unused port, will not find that last port, and will return the message you described.
