Hi all! I've broken down and ordered the TS-1000 from J&R. Can anyone give me some ideas on how I need to get started? Should I upgrade the firmware ASAP, do I need the charger base, etc...? I'm planning on using it to control whole system. Thanks in advance...your posts are great!

Are you sure it's new - it is probably refurbished.

The firmware is likely to be old. After checking the version you have (by going into setup mode), use ProntoEdit 1.05 to upgrade to the current firmware.

As for getting started:
- read the FAQ
- read the reviews
- read all manufacturer's versions of the manuals
- play around a bit
- then read them all again

as for the charger it is a personal decision, I find not having to worry about batteries to be an advantage. The cost is high enough that it is hard to make a $$ argument for it (it is a lot of batteries) but
1) you can increase LCD time, and have the backligh always on, while you would tend to conserve more with batteries
2) Pronto is always ready
3) Pronto looks cool resting on base instead of table
