What you describe you have like about what you have read is the very reason you should get it. As i have said here many times, you teill
it how you want it set up. You don't have to adapt to the remote, as is the case with most of them. also, the ability to do one-button macro commands to accomplish many tasks is beautiful.
As for the case, it's worth it because of the protection it gives to the screen, the way it doesn't slide like the plactic case does, and the additional padding if its dropped. Personally, I prefer the look of the bare case, but the trade-off is worth it.
