Hi,

I hate to say it, but the new pronto pro contents sounds a bit dumb to me.

Most of us down here own a pronto or PRO (which already uploaded their CCF to this site), so the winner would be basically a non-owner designer working hard at a design without owning a pronto (or pronto pro?).

So, the more likely scenario is that the winner would be someone that already has a remote...

Anyway, a lottery of people answering questions correctly seems more in order.

Just my humble opinion.

Most people would only have a b/w pronto. Therefore it's really about giving someone with good design skills a chance to win one, as it's pretty much out of the reach of most of us.

It's just a shame, that my creative abilities are up there with a drunken spider, that's just crawled out of a ink pot :-)

It should mean, lots of colour ccf's afterwards, which will be good for everyone.

I have a 2000. I wouldn't buy a Pro, but if you give me one, I'll sure take it.

1) Yes, YOUR opinion, and hopefully only yours.

2) I you really hated to say it, you wouldn't have.

3) If you think another lottery would be more in order, start one. Don't criticize the one that can bring some new fresh designs to the site and reward some hard work with a $1000 prize that can be given to a friend if the winner already has one. Hmmmmmmmmm.... giving........ strange idea, eh??!!

I have to agree with oferlaor.

I'm not going to spend tortuous hours using the Pro softs to make a config when I don't have one. Odds on I wouldn't win so I suppose I'd have to buy one to make my effort worth while...(maybe this is the point!).

Hmmm...Philips taking a grand for a remote...taking...strange idea, eh??!!

(Sorry Greg, I had to do it!)

Sorry Oferloar, I tghink it is a greate idea. I would not mind a Pro, and even winning a second Pronto I would find a use for it.
(if you don't want it and you don't want to give it away, you can always put on sale.

P.S. have you noticed he did not say change the prize, but change ythe contest (I think it is sour grapes)

Mango: Just because you choose not to spend many hours doing the config doesn't make it a "dumb" contest.

However, I always love a witty comeback! Good one! ;-)

OOps, Ok, I see it!

You know, I might just give that a shot. Looks like fun to me. Then if I win, I've already got my CCF, no?

GregoriousM,

Listen, don't knock me down for saying something you don't like to hear... As you can see, I'm not the only one that thinks this way.

What I'm saying is this:

1. I own an Pronto TSU2000.

2. On the chance of winning a pronto pro (fat chance), I would have to work for hours, creating color bitmap graphics - using my hardware, by downloading the pronto pro editor on this site.

3. I wouldn't be able to test it, to see if it really downloads OK, I wouldn't really be able to actually learn any codes.

I think many people are like me on this board - they have a B/W pronto and wouldn't buy the color one, since it's too expensive. HOWEVER, they would love to have one (just like I would).

Basically, I think this contest leaves 2 types of people in the running:

1. People that already have pronto pro and would create a UI for themselves anyway (if they have one - why give them a second one to sell on Ebay?).

2. People that wouldn't be able to test their work, so they are bound to fail - since they would use too much graphics and it wouldn't really work in real life (read the recent posts on Pronto Pro to see what I mean).

Anyway, I understand the purpose here - to create alot more CCFs for pronto pros, which will kickstart the design process.

Still, other remotes had a more reasonable (i.e., giving people like me a shot at winning, of course) approach to these contests. Of course, it's sour grapes, I want a PRO too, but I wouldn't waste a minute designing a CCF if I would never use it...

Personally, I would give one to MR. Tonks - as an appreciation gift for all his work (past, present and future) in the area of pronto CCF design.

That is, if I had one to give :)

oferlaor: If your logic is correct with respect to my comments, then all I can say is: Don't knock Remote Central for making a Contest that you don't like to see! Get the correlation?

You've adequately explained your position.

Now, if this quote is correct: "Personally, I would give one to MR. Tonks - as an appreciation gift for all his work (past, present and future) in the area of pronto CCF design." then I assume you've already given to the BDT Award??!!

... Greg :-)

Goddammit, I have to agree with Greg again!

But I have a 2000, and if I can find the time, I will give it a shot for the fun of it, and maybe I could win, who knows? Also, maybe I'll come up with some improvements I can use for my 2000, converting color images to grayscale. So I don't see the problem with entering a contest on a chance to win something, even if all you're ultimately doing is benefitting the community. What's wrong with that? You don't like it? Don't enter? I think that's what Greg's saying.

Now, all that being said, what happened was that, for the first time I took a look at the Pro CCFs in the files area. Because I don't have a Pro and couldn't really see them in action, I downloaded PPE, and several Pro CCFs and fired them up with the emulator. I have to say, for all my bitching about what crap the Pro is, the CCfs completely blew me away!! The displays are so far superior to the 2000 that it's made me re-evaluate my often-stated hostility to the Pro. Just take David Gager's and jerry Dobson's for a test ride, and it will be like riding in a Ferrari after thinking a Jeep Cherokee is cool!

I've never been so surprised in my life!

Wow - this is a tough room... it's "trashing the BDT Award" deja-vu all over again.

I think it's a great idea. The Pro graphics are much tougher to build - anything that provides an incentive to get the creative types here involved is a good thing.

In my case I have a semi-reasonable grasp on programming these things & will help out when I'm able, but flunked out of art class. Can't draw a straight line, don't spend much time with graphics programs, & have such a bad sense of colors that somebody else should dress me. (Anybody remember GggrrrAnimals?)

For the people who see this contest as fun, challenging, useful, whatever...great! For those that don't, don't enter!

You'll have to excuse me if I don't roll my eyes at how Greg always stands up for daniel and this site as if it was his son-- But what ever the case may be- I still agree with Greg.

Seeing the negative comments about the contest also makes me feel better too- I've been battleing with myself to know If I should give the damn contest a shot- I think the contest in essence is a great contest- but I am debating whether my effort and time is really worth it- because I am not confident that I will win. (And why should I be?) But then again, just because you are not sure of the outcome does not mean you shouldn't try someting right?

Well whatever the case may be I'm beginning my tinkering, and I really do want to win- And I think I may have a chance (albeit a small one).

One more thing- no offense to oferlaor, but I hate the lottery idea- It's left too much to chance- I think this contest will reward someone who really works hard and has a gift, (as opposed to having more luck than anything else)
